Nirbhay Cruise Missile in flight

by Hemant Kumar Rout

BHUBANESWAR:
After two consecutive failures, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is gearing up for a fresh experimental trial of India’s first home-grown subsonic cruise missile Nirbhay with a hope that the weapon system this time will not let them down.

Hectic preparations are underway at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) off Odisha coast as the missile has been scheduled for the test next week. It will be fifth launch of the missile in the last five years.

Once powered by a turbofan engine, Nirbhay will be tested using a turbojet engine for the first time.

“The launch window has been set for November 7 to 9. Final checks of the missile sub-systems are on and hopefully the missile will be ready for test in next two days. A team of experts are monitoring the launch preparations. We are planning for the launch on Tuesday,” said an official associated with the project.

Once powered by a turbofan engine, Nirbhay will be tested using a turbojet engine for the first time. DRDO scientists are expecting a success this time as wing deployment and navigation software problems, detected during the pre-launch check-ups in May which led to its postponement, seem to have been rectified.

Of four tests so far, three have been failed as the missile had achieved partial success during the second test in 2014. The first test flight conducted on March 12, 2013, was an utter failure as the missile crashed only after 20 minutes of flight and its remnants fell in an orchard in Jagatsinghpur district, about 150 km from the launch site.

Nirbhay’s last trial conducted on December 21, 2016, was aborted midway as the missile changed its course. The missile project was mired in controversy after ‘The Express’ raised doubts on its outcome prior to third and fourth trials since it was pushed for test with faults in the flight control and navigation software.

The six-metre long two-stage missile can strike a target 1,000 km away. With a diameter of 0.52 metres and wing span of 2.7 metres, it weighs around 1,500 kg and can carry warheads up to 200 kg. Comparable with America’s Tomahawk missile as far as the stealth capability, it can cruise at a speed of Mach 0.8.

Nirbhay blasts off like a rocket and unlike a missile it turns into a vehicle akin an aircraft. Flying at tree-top level it can deceive enemy radars making it difficult to be detected. Designed by Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) and launched in 2004, the project is on an 18-month extension which expires in June 2018.

. . .
Well what can one expect from IIT educated so-called boffins:lol:.Kudos bro
That's why they say..you need brain even for copying. They always said Brahmos is the supersonic highly advanced missile and used to laugh on Pakistan Babur being subsonic CM but all of the sudden they realised they need a subsonic missile after getting a supersonic missile ....something is fishy fishy.. daal main kuch tu peela ha

Daal mein sirf kissi bewakoof ka bheja ghum raha hai.

This is not about subsonic and supersonic; this is about range. Read up the specs; now there is an option of supersonic 350 kms and subsonic 1000 kms. If you keep channeling a pit bull, you won't have time to think of these little subtleties.

warn your kind as well who are using terms like madrassa, Jihadi, it cant be one sided old man.

I've never been one-sided; if you had an iota of objectivity, you would acknowledge it.

Can you point them out on this thread? Do that and I'll take care of it.

.
Even now I am praying that this test is successful, one major reason is that it would lead to Pakistan also coming up with a 1500 KM range Babur

. .
Far more better things that madarssa educated bozos whose best technical competency is paint job:lolz:

There is little or no point in dragging a form of education peculiar to one community into the picture. Our engineers are better and that is a proven fact. Why are you dragging madrassahs into it?

I request you to replace that with a less communal word. Pakistanis are trained in good institutions, and it is not the madrassah-taught people who run their scientific and technical institutions.

Please do think over this, and correct your wording.

How its different from your country which have not succeed in developing Arjunk, Tejas, nirbhay like jokes and claims to be developing space and missile tech indigenously along with nuclear subs, Russian engineers are still roaming in your shipyards yet your nuclear submarine is indigenous and not a paint job? believe it and delude yourself. believe that you got nothing from anywhere and all tech is reason of your indigenous industrial advancement :enjoy:

99% stuff in your arsenal is Russian yet you speak of indigenization..

rate this on page 1.

Please track this and continue to do so. I have posted to that member, very politely.

Why they shifted from turbo fan to turbo jet?Any idea.

Turbojet provides more velocity and thrust than turbofan. Its also more compact and provides good performance over various altitudes. Its however less fuel efficient.

no, i am just pointing how indegenious they are, they are as indegenious as other junks you have produced till now.

Arihant%2Btest%2BREACTOR%2B2.jpg

This is the on land prototype of Indian Submarine INS Arihant Propulsion Reactor made by India' BARC .
Do you plan to build anything with Chinese help in next 20 years ?

Next sub INS Aridhaman double as powerful would be ready to be unveiled in few months .

India is going places and make niche for itself in the world of science and tech . As India is moving miles ahead of you and you know you will never catch up, So Pakistanis like you can burn to ashes in jealously and inferiority complex.

PS: I hope pakistan doesn't miss her next months EMI with the world bank . Cheers.

No one is saying they are not being build low IQ bharati, just Thank Russian scientists and engineers who are roaming around BARC and your shipyards. they shower you these gifts bcoz you are best cows for years. paint will be the only indigenous achievement. these plants will never fail, lol otherwise you showed your competence with unimportant junk such as Arjunk and teja despite help of the whole world.

meanwhile read this and fume.

Pakistan defence industrial base better than ours: Army vice chief

Why would do that...?
They are doing good job sh!tting in Indus...and you know where the water ends up!!

Indus only flows through J&K, they are not roadshitters..

LOL

He said this at CII , a private industrialist body seminar in the context of
Ordnance Factory Board or OFB which makes ammunition for indian army , that too with huge exaggeration to encourage private Indian industrial bodies to join ammunition manufacturing .

If you thinks he said this about
larger miltary industrial complex in India vis-a-vis Pakistan , you live in la la land . But i see Pakistanis fall for this sort of wild stories and dance and jump around with joy while reamianing in denial of reality .o_Oo_O
