A manned Indian mission to space could take place in 2021 - seven years from now - given the progress that the Indian Space Research Organisation has made in its design and development efforts, ISRO Chairman Dr K Radhakrishnan, has told NDTV.
Key to launching a manned mission would be testing a three person crew capsule - the prototype of which is set to be tested within days, once the indigenous GSLV Mk-III rocket blasts off from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.
Dr Radhakrishnan added that ISRO has held discussions on what to call an Indian astronaut but a final decision would be left to the Indian public to decide.
Appearing on a special show, along with all senior members of the entire Mangalyaan (Mars Mission) team, Dr Radhakrishnan said that ISRO had locked in a design of an Indian-made Martian lander and would soon be in a position to build a prototype.
He added that Mangalyaan, the spacecraft which entered the orbit Mars orbit in September, was healthy and is now likely to remain operational for years, well beyond the six to ten months that had once been envisioned
. ISRO scientists are looking at data received from the orbiter's sensors and say exciting new discoveries could be announced within two to three months.
This is the first time that the entire ISRO Mangalyaan team has appeared together on any television network

Finally we have a dead line at least lol. now would they stick to it is a different matter

This is one of the many deadlines. India should announce the project only when it's ready. Such as the Mars mission. All these long term projections have a history of getting push back. For example, India had predicted to put a man in space in 2015 back in 2008. That is a 7 year projection. Now, India is making another 7 year prediction of putting man in space. India should wait until 2020 to make prediction in 2021. Otherwise, no one would believe it.

No one's interested whether you believe it or not.

Manned mission 're facing trouble due to low solar activity....I hope our VYOMNAUTS make it to mars.

Low solar activity poses risk for Mars-bound astronaut

 Forget MARS, they won't evens send people into space until they are absolutely sure that it will be safe. They are a VERY risk averse agency unless it's abosolutely necessary (think GSLV). I guess that's right too- it's better to delay something by several years rather than take even a small risk that the human astronatus are harmed- there is a heavy political price for that.

So all would prediction back in 2008 about sending a man in space sound can be excused by "risk adverse"
