It may sound like a hoax, but its true. Two IT students in Bhubaneshwar have built a laptop that will cost you Rs. 5000 and are hoping to get some government aid to mass-produce the device. If this turns into a reality, it will be a great help to schools especially in rural India to help spread computer literacy.

The device looks like your everyday netbook but boasts of a 320GB HDD, 1 GB of RAM 10.2-inch screen, built-in web camera, speakers, LAN port, 2 USB ports as well as a VGA port. The processor is a DXA 16 processor, which, according to its developers, is equivalent to an Intel Atom N450 processor. The two students, Chandrasekhar Panda and Saswat Swain have spent 3000 hours developing the laptop.

Saswat Swain, IT Graduate and Innovator told NDTV, "In case you are providing a laptop for Rs 5000 each and every school can get 5 to 10 pieces of laptop easily, it will naturally help them to improve their education standard."

I heard this news on TV channels. These guys have really done a terrific job. They have approached orrissa Govt to help them financially in setting up of mass production facilities. this proves, there is enough talent available in india and there is a need to support such inventors. my hats off to these people. this might actually also help in major companies to reduce the prices of branded laptops.

I'm skeptical. There was a similar hoolpa when Notion Ink launched Adam, but they are running into problems right now. It is best to wait and watch whether this product can be mass produced for the same cost.

A 10.2-inch screen cannot be a laptop, its just a trimmed down netbook.

How do you make it cheap without making the components yourself at dirt cheap price. Sounds like hoax again.

. .
^ Mass production can keep the overall prices very low.

To be fair if its subcontracted to a china manufacturer it is possible to keep the price low but the order volume will have to be huge. The article also mentions that this will make the branded companies bring their prices down, realistically the price of the laptop is not expensive to make. Its the markup that pushes the price up.

Some people are just out of mind. Not possible till we make Chips, OS.

Its a netbook. You can buy one for about 200-250 Australian dollars here. Thats about 8000 INR. So not that hard to make somethign for 5 grand based on Linux in India. Don't see the big deal.:undecided:

Bro, I have seen similar claims from no less than a union govt minister. If you add the components above it mentioned in article it will be more than 5000 Rs. They want to manufacture their own CPU( not atom), that will increase the price instead of decreasing, as they can never match the sales of atom.
Lastly, who will give warranty(jacks up price yet again)
Yes I saw the NDTV report saying 320 GB "memory".
