Aftermath of Indian Train Accident - Video - The New York Times

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - A train killed at least 34 people crossing a railway track in eastern India on Monday, triggering a protest by passengers who beat the driver unconscious, attacked other staff and torched a carriage, officials and media said.

Railways spokesman Anil Saxena said that some of those hit by the express train were Hindu pilgrims who had left two trains at Dhamara station, 180 km (110 miles) east of Patna, the capital of Bihar state. Reports said dozens were injured.

"Passengers got out of the train, came on the track and they were moving on that track. That is the time they got run over," Arunendra Kumar, chairman of the Railway Board, told a news conference in New Delhi.

About 40 people on average die every day on India's vast but decrepit railway network. Many of the victims are slum dwellers who live near the lines and use them as open toilets. Some passengers fall off overcrowded commuter trains.

Trains are big makes lots of noise, ground sort of shakes when it approaches, and relatively not that fast, how does this many people die, how does this happen.

Seems impossible.

I agree, were people still that stupid to stand on the tracks?

Even if they did, you can see it from a mile a way. There might be some special cases where something crazy unexpected happens.

But this case is weird, are the people glued to the track? Running away but still on the track? All in one place? In a car?

Cause otherwise it implies that these people were ran over 1 by 1 as the next one watches and gets ran over

There is a curving just hundred meters away from the Platform and it was too late before the driver pulled the brakes on.And the poor devotees could not hear the sirens as there was huge sound of bells ringing and bands in the adjacent temple. It was a perfect recipe for disaster.

Train tracks are not always straight, they curve and create blind spots. In such scenarios even if you heard the whistle, you would never know which track and how fast the train is approaching until yo can sight it. Sometimes acoustics can play games with you. I have been fooled many a times even at level crossing where I think the train is approaching from the left but it zips past from the right.

People are indeed stupid. I have seen people slip past gates even when they are closed to save a second. However, you would be surprised how fast a train can approach when you can't see it. Now imagine the panic when you know you only have a second to take action.
