Indian scholar Asghar Ali Engineer dies


MUMBAI: Internationally acclaimed Islamic scholar, author and social leader Asghar Ali Engineer passed away in Mumbai on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. He was 74.

He is survived by his son Irfaan and daughter Seema Indorewala.

Engineer, who had been ailing for several months, breathed his last at his Santacruz east residence around 8 a.m., Irfaan said.

The funeral is likely to be conducted in Mumbai Wednesday, he said.

RIP Asghar Ali Engineer.
He was a relentless reformist who fought for progress in his own sect of Dawoodi Bohras in particular and Muslims in general. His campaigns against obscurantist thought are legendary.
