Nearly 300 communist rebels and their supporters have reportedly escaped from an Indian prison in an armed jailbreak.

A police spokesman said 299 of the 377 inmates in Dantewada prison in Chhattisgarh state had escaped.

"The inmates overpowered the prison guards and fled amid gunfire," police superintendent Rahul Sharma was quoted as telling New Delhi Television.

Reports said the remaining prisoners had taken control of the jail. But this has not been confirmed.

India's Zee News cited intelligence sources saying there had been clashes between inmates before the escape, and that possibly these were planned as a distraction.

Thousands killed

Police said reinforcements had been sent to the area to help search for the escapees.

The prisoners at Dantewada, south of the state capital Rajpur, are said to be mainly Naxalite rebels - militants fighting for a communist state in eastern India - and their supporters.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has described these Maoist guerrillas as the most serious threat to India's national security.

The rebels say they are fighting for the rights of tribes people and landless peasants.

They have killed thousands of people, including hundreds of policemen, in the past three decades.

. . . .
These are all inside jobs where money flows.

There were Naxals of the Maoist group that broke out and that is what makes things real serious.

Comparing may bring solace to the tormented and anguished heart, but it in no way solves the problem or make the terrorists less dangerous in either of the countries, or does it?

Criminals are criminals, but the real criminals are the one who are supposed to guard them!

. . . . . .
it is and these rebels pose a great threat to india's defence.:pdf:

These are matters of internal security/crime/law and order, which are not good. But this does not affect the defence of the countr. This topic is as much not worth discussing as the capture of few army troops in pakistan. These are stray incidents and I would rather call it irritants than calling it a national threat.

I hope you would agree with me.

the capture of Pakistani solders is discussed on this forum. they are not a minor irritant these people are part of the longest running insurgency in India. they have killed scores of Indian military and para military personal. these are also fighting actively for an independent state which borders china. any escalation might engulf the whole region into a conflict so i would strenuously plead and say that this does effect India's defence

Let's get few things straight.

1) Maoist's arn't demanding any separate independent state. They want to bring India under Maoist rule & that is their agenda.

2) They have killed scores of policemen & not Indian military & Para military personnels. Indian Military hasn't even taken them on yet.

3) The heart of Maoist Insurgency is in the central Indian state of Chhatisharh which is about 1000 miles from the nearest Chinese border. So there is no way that it could affect the whole region.
