A minister in the Indian state of Rajasthan has quit after a row over disparaging remarks he made about President Pratibha Patil.

Amin Khan said she was appointed president for services to the ruling Congress party, which included cooking food and washing dishes in former prime minister Indira Gandhi's house.

His comments were widely condemned as offensive to women.

Mr Khan said he merely meant to suggest the party rewarded loyal workers.

Mrs Patil, a long-time Congress party member, was appointed president in July 2007.

She is known to be close to the party chief Sonia Gandhi, daughter-in-law of Indira Gandhi.

"The president cooked food and washed dishes in Indira Gandhi's kitchen in 1977," Mr Khan told a gathering of Congress workers on Tuesday.

"She never asked for anything in return, so she was finally rewarded by the Congress with the president's post," he said.

India's opposition Bharatiya Janata Party also criticised his statement saying it was derogatory to women.

Mr Khan said that his comment was misconstrued and that he wanted to highlight how Mrs Patil was rewarded for her dedication to the party .

India's president is the head of the state and has largely ceremonial and symbolic duties.

Can be true....All the presidents during Indira and Rajiv gandhi rule were those who were boot licker of gandhi family.Congress is more like a party of sycophants. So its loyals of Gandhi families are rewarded with like lucrative posts of presidents, governors or even with padmashrees as in case of barkha dutt of NDTV the media scamester of 2G fame.

It's really sad that we have to have a president like Mrs. Patil, when we have capable people like Dr. Abdul Kalam and Mr. Seshan

Servile Patil was hand picked by Sonia to remain loyal to her. Sonia also has a silent PM as her chamcha who is silent on 2G scam.

She was no domestic help. She was a party loyalist and definitely part of Indira Gandhi coterie. She might have helped her in cooking or cooked for her in her home. That is so usual in politics. Even if you see any movement the leader generally don't do the cooking or washing. It is not surprising in a multiparty democracy to see a loyalist to get a coveted post.

Every where we can see such instances where there is a hoard to remain ion the good books of ones boss. It brings in promotion and bucks. So those who ascribe Patil's service to her party president as sycophancy are little too much critical and political in nature.

As far as his personal quantification goes she has double masters in Political science and economics from the University of Bombay (Mumbai), a national level table tennis player, a four time minister in maharastra Govt, governor of Rajasthan etc.

The lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani said that two CDs have surfaced which contain incriminating material against Patil's brother. The CDs contain footage of the elections for the district Congress presidentship in Jalgaon. Jethmalani offered to place both CDs on record, saying "These contain vital information showing the political link behind the murder."

Jalgaon case: HC slams CBI for tardiness - The Times of India

Pratibha Mahila Sahakari Bank, a cooperative bank set up by Pratibha Patil in 1973 in her name, to empower women, had its license revoked in 2003 by the Reserve Bank of India for alleged financial irregularities. Among the reasons listed by the RBI for cancellation of the license was the faulty loan policy of the bank and loan interest waivers given, among others, to Pratibha Patil's relatives.
