Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Saturday said the profitability of the Indian port sector by the end of current year will reach around Rs.6,000 crore.

The profit would be invested for creating assets to spur up growth, he said.

Addressing a session at the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry here, the minister said in the next five years the contribution of highways and shipping sector to national GDP would rise to two percent from current insignificant level.

With poised growth, the roads, highways and shipping sectors would be able to create 50 lakh employment opportunities, he said.

Gadkari said the infrastructure sector in India would witness massive changes and transformation in next few years as by then many four-lane roads and highways would be converted into eight-lane ones as also a large number of national highways be turned into expressways.

He said the necessary permissions and approvals for undertaking such assignments have been completed and hoped the bill relating to making 111 water-ways would be cleared in the winter session of parliament.

While the thekedars of Idea of india are busy ranting about intolerance Prabhu and Gadkari are silently building infrastructure which will carry India forward. In any other nation their work and achievements would catch the headlines of media but here they are completely ignored rather media discusses day and night about a case of lynching in some far remote corner of the country dragging the country name to new lows as if making it rape capital of the world was not enough.

Let it be, the Indian and foreign media are naturally inclined to be anti-Modi/BJP/NDA but that is rather irrelvent. The current GoI is laying the groundwork for India's elevation from the dirt to a developed nation, if they get bad mouthed in the press who cares? As long as they are quietly getting on with their job that is all that matters.

Manohar Parrikar has been a total let down as far as I am concerned. Most of the credit on the defence front should go to the NSA and PMO.

irrelevant?? in a democracy public perception is the most important factor for any party which media plays the most important role in building. Their biased journalism(if you can call it that) is creating negative perception in the minds of even educated middle class people against the current government evident from delhi elections

Another example of Gadkari's work.
Editorial: Government LED the way | The Financial Express

Another very good example of how the government is using its powers of bulk purchases to dramatically drive down costs is what’s happened to cement. When highways minister Nitin Gadkari first spoke of constructing concrete highways, most rubbished this as too expensive and, in fact, cement prices started rising in anticipation of the increased demand. The government, however, decided to create a portal for purchasing cement and, in the process, managed to convince producers that they would benefit by lowering prices. With poor offtake for cement and capacity utilisation at most plants low, a total of 37 cement manufacturers have committed to selling the government 9.5 million tonnes at a price of Rs 120-140 per bag as compared to Rs 300 or so at the time Gadkari first announced the construction of concrete roads. The same exercise is now being replicated for steel. These schemes clearly show that when the government wants, it can play the role of a catalyst in promoting and pushing necessary changes quickly.
