LONDON-- A 12-year-old Indian-origin contestant on a British television show has become an overnight sensation after he answered all questions correctly.

Rahul, whose surname is not being revealed, got all 14 of his questions correct in the first round of the latest series of Child Genius, a show broadcast by Channel 4.

He has an IQ of 162, which is believed to be higher than the likes of Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking and qualifies him to be a member of Mensa club - the largest and oldest high IQ society in the world.

However, as neither scientist is recorded as having taken an IQ test, the scores are only estimates.

On the TV show, 20 contestants aged eight to 12 will be whittled down to one winner over the course of a week.

Rahul achieved full marks in a spelling test, correctly reciting the letters in words like garrulous, accouchement, and hyponatraemia (low level of sodium in the blood). In a timed memory round, he answered 14 questions out of 15 correctly, but did not have time to answer the final question.

"I always want to do the best, and I'll do that no matter what the cost. I think I'm a genius. I'm good at mental maths, general knowledge and I find it quite easy to memorise stuff," said Rahul, who cites his favourite language as Latin.

"Most kids want immediate gratification but I also want long-term gratification. If I could play maybe my Xbox now, I'll be really happy now, but I might be sad later on because I haven't revised for my test," he said.

His success in the first round of the show made him an instant social media hit.

One Twitter user joked: "Rahul could negotiate peace between North Korea and the USA."

While he narrowly lost out in a maths round, he is exempt from elimination due to his high score.

Rahul's IT manager father, Minesh, and pharmacist mother Komal said their son was in the game to win and their role was to encourage him. "We are here to win. There's no two ways about that. We're all achievers. I used to play table tennis for Barnet council. We're always trying to better ourselves," said Minesh.

The show's finale will take place over the weekend to crown the UK's brightest child.

Just a manifestation of what next generation Indian kids are to be. Indians are genius who gave world the knowledge of medicine, concept of molecules, construction, Zero, Maths, Algebra, Microprocessor, Email etc. They have continued to astonish the world.

There is nothing special about Mensa ......... one in hundred can become a member of Mensa. There are millions of people who are eligible for it.

But the name Minesh and Komal tell me that they are Gujarati's. Probably a Patel or a Shah or a Mehta.

On second thought, they could also be from UP. Rahul is not a very popular name among Gujarati's.

IQ is overrated dude. In the end work ethic is what will trump everything else.

Unless you want to involve this 12 years old kid into child labor.
You got to wait for work ethic.

Shooting from hips is unethical too.

Typical sub continent parent.

Nothing wrong with being competitive. In a world where kids are becoming celebrities because of talent in singing, and we have 10 year old fashion models strutting down cat walks, it's nice to know some people have their priorities right.

@WebMaster @Horus @Irfan Baloch @Slav Defence @Icarus

I have been told previously that sometimes young minds can be viewing these pages, so we must not project views that will corrupt them. A stupid comparison of 'Indian kids better than Pakistani/Bangladeshi kids' is absolutely the wrong views to project. This is an attempt at spreading toxicity into young kids. Please monitor this thread closely.

Food for thought: @amardeep mishra @Śakra @wiseone2 @randomradio @third eye

Let the child be, he is already intelligent, why pressurize him so much?

All this competition is killing our natural talent and that of our children ............... the hardest thing is to cope with a failure and stand again with a smiling face.

And as regards to IQ, this doesn't remain the same, it keeps changing for any particular individual.

Couldnt agree more.

It appalls me to see children in reality shows. Parents thoughtlessly expose their children to stage shows at a time when they should be growing up & having fun.

Well, that is the difference between Pakistan and Australia. I recently had the opportunity to talk with a Pakistani who grew up here. When I asked him what's the biggest difference between education in Pakistan and education in Australia, he said there is no pressure. But then again, in Australia kids with ADHD are put into the same class as other kids and then everybody tries to make sure they don't get left behind.

In my opinion, a bit of strictness to nurture the drive for excellence in kids is absolutely the right thing to do. Character building to face failure is part of it. The worst thing for the kid during competition is for his parents to show lack of confidence by telling him it doesn't matter.

Aren't reality shows just the next level after quiz competitions, spelling competitions etc?

Well our whole education system needs to be revamped, there is lot of disparity.

Strictness as long as its necessary for character building I am fine with it, but when it comes to education let the child breath and learn something on his own. Confident, strong children with high morals is what matters more. Toppers not every other child needs to be a topper.
