India on Monday took a major step forward towards strengthening the security of it's island territories by setting up a second naval base at Lakshadweep islands.
The base, christened INS Dweeprakshak, was commissioned at Kavaratti in the Lakshadweep archipelago by Southern Naval Commander Vice Admiral K.N. Sushil.
The base will not only provide additional coastal security to the 36 islands in Lakshdweep archipelago but will also guard the sea lanes used by merchant ships and help in intelligence gathering.
"Lakshadweep islands form the maritime frontiers of our country on the western side. Commissioning of a full-fledged Naval Base is another milestone in the commitment of Indian Navy to maintain effective coastal surveillance and defence capability," Vice Admiral Sushil said.
Radar stations and other surveillance measures have been put in place for monitoring the shipping traffic and intelligence gathering in the area.
A firmer footing in the islands, which are spread out astride some of the busiest shipping lanes of the world, would provide the necessary wherewithal to the Indian Navy to discharge its responsibilities. Lakshadweep is India's only coral island chain.
The archipelago consists of 36 islands, 12 atolls, 3 reefs and 5 submerged banks. Only 10 islands - namely, Agatti, Amini, Andrott, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Kiltan and Minicoy - are inhabited.
The islands have a total area of 32 sq.km. and the lagoons enclosed by the atolls cover an area of 4,200 sq.km.

They need to stop putting all eggs in the "capital" cities of each province. What about the other atolls and tiny islands that could do with a single small patrol boat and a crew of 6 decently armed sailors? We have more than 1700 islands in India and how can we ensure that each of them cannot be taken over by terrorists?

Independent India

The inhabitants of these islands, remote from the mainland of India, heard the final news of the Partition and Independence of India some days after it occurred on 15 August 1947. As the islands were then British possessions and part of the Madras Presidency, in accordance with the Indian Independence Act 1947, enacted by the British parliament a month before, the islands transferred automatically to the new Union of India. However, considering that they also had a Muslim majority, it seemed possible that the new dominion of Pakistan might seek to lay claim to them. On the orders of Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of India, known as the Iron Man, a ship of the Royal Indian Navy was sent to the Laccadives (as they were then called) to hoist the Indian national flag and ensure the islands' integration into the new Union of India, aiming to thwart any similar attempt by Pakistan. Hours after the arrival of the Indian ship, vessels of the Royal Pakistan Navy were seen near the islands, but after observing the Indian presence they returned to Karachi.

A similar thread was posted 2/3 weeks before.

It a good move from IN but what I would like to see 2/3 air strips with Naval fighters stationed may be 1/2 sqd. and survilience planes. It's very important trade root so IN must be able to project its power over it

woh sab toh theek hai par Lakshadeep jaane mein itne paise lagte hai jitne mein mai singapore ka 2 way ticket bhi ho jaaye..
