Indian Navy Commander Killed in Warship Accident
NEW DELHI — Ten days after the resignation of Adm. D.K. Joshi, chief of the Indian Navy, following a fatal submarine fire, a modern Indian stealth destroyer, INS Kolkata, met with an accident at Mazagon Docks Ltd. (MDL), killing one officer.
Kolkata, which was built by MDL, sustained a gas leak that led to the death of a Navy commander and injured two more personnel Friday at the dockyard, a Navy source said.
An MDL official said a carbon dioxide gas leak led to the disaster.
The Navy source said the ship had no weapons on board at the time of the accident. A board of inquiry has been constituted to look into the accident, said the source.
The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded the resignation of Defense Minister A.K. Antony.
Kolkata was built by MDL under a program, approved by the Navy in 2000, called Project 15A. The intent was to build three stealth destroyers in Indian shipyards.
Construction on Kolkata was begun in 2003 and the ship was launched in 2006. At the time of the accident, Kolkata was undergoing sea trials.
The destroyer has the capability to launch the Indo-Russian made supersonic cruise missile BrahMos, and can be mounted with the Israeli-made Barak air defense system.
