Protesters demand inquiry into two Muslims killing by police

NEW DELHI: Thousands of Muslims from Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday staged a protest outside the Indian parliament building against the alleged harassment of Muslim youth.
The protesters alleged that security agencies had been rounding up young Muslims in the states several villages on the pretext of tackling terror.
The demonstrators arrived in New Delhi in a special train - Ulema Express and claimed that more than 60 youths in the district had been missing for the past one year. They said the missing people could be in police custody.
Enquiry: Speakers addressing the rally demanded the government investigate the alleged killing of two persons from Azamgarh by police, in what they called a staged encounter in New Delhi a few months ago.
They also criticised the government for awarding the highest Indian peacetime civilian award - Ashok Chakra - to Inspector MC Sharma, who was also killed in the shootout.
The protesters demanded a Supreme Court judge investigate the matter and publicise the report within 30 days.
The police had accused the two Muslim men of being involved in the September 13 serial bombings in New Delhi.
We waited enough, but by awarding the Ashok Chakra to MC Sharma, the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance has authenticated the September 19 Batla House encounter, Amir Rashadi, convener of the Ulema Council said. Rashadi also criticised the Congress for letting Muslims down, saying the council would now consider supporting a third front in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The Congress has been making a fool of the Muslim community by constantly raising the bogey of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other communal forces, he said.
Though we do not intend to form a full-fledged political outfit, we will independently contest the election from Azamgarh and the neighbouring Lalganj. We also intend to support the third front, he said
