Indian sailors taken hostage by Somali pirates appeal for release

PTI | Oct 6, 2012, 02.09PM IST

NEW DELHI: A group of sailors taken hostage by Somali pirates nearly two years ago have appealed to the government to get them released from captivity.

The video appeal by the sailors, who were earlier kept hostage by the pirates onboard merchant vessel MV Asphalt Venture, has surfaced on the internet.

In the appeal, chief engineer Bahadur Singh said their health was deteriorating. "We are fed up. We are mentally tensed all the time. Our health is not good. Please save us," he said.

The sailors' families have also appealed to the government.

Singh said the pirates have brought the ship to Somalia and they were in captivity for the past 22 months.

"They have released the ship and now we are in their custody. Our owner had fulfilled their demands but they caught seven of us and brought us to the land.

"Our condition is very bad. I don't know what action is the government taking...We are requesting President (Pranab Mukherjee), Prime Minister (Manmohan Singh) and UPA chief Sonia Gandhi and Opposition Leader Sushma Swaraj to please save us.

"We want our lives, please help us, please save us," he said.

Last time it took a Pakistani citizen to save the Indian's neck from the Somali pirates, we never hear the end of India's booming economy and Forex reserves and the billions being spent on weapons but it takes Pakistan to come to Indians's rescue. And where are all those Ambanis, Malyas and Prem Jis the Indians feel so proud of.

I agree with you, mate.

You're right here. Our government is shameless and pathetic.

Congress has been taking the entire country hostage in the last 2 years.

I mean we have caught so many pirates but this PATHETIC SICK evil government called Congress won't rescue our own sailors.

Hats off to that Pakistani citizen who had the big heart to help us get our people back.

Con-gress and her lapdogs will suffer for this.

It is a shame that a Navy as powerful as ours is a hostage to faecal residue of Colonial era rather than having the power to do the necessary in times of such crises.

its not the govt job to do this . they have no mandate to do so . the owner of the vessel has to pay the ransom . the company is an Indian company , they should be the ones to clear this due . but they have refused to do so . they instead just want to sit back and let these sailors rot . The sailors then had no other option but to approach the govt .

the govt too has its own limitations. if they do negotiate with the pirates and pay they set a bad precedence . more Indian vessels will be targeted that way .

That is actually not the case. The pirates have already released the ship upon payment of the ransom and released part of the crew with the ship. They hold these unfortunate chaps as a bargaining ploy to barter them in exchange for a 100 pirates captured by the Indian navy who are now in Indian jails. The government's position is that it won't release the pirates. It would probably be possible to mount a rescue mission but even if successful would still impact those Indians who have been captured on other ships. The government is not at fault here, the situation is a fairly complex one & does not offer up simple solutions. What the families of the hostages want is for the government to just give in which obviously the government has no intention of doing & the families oppose any military action. Tough call this.

ehm excuse me Mr. op but in same article your answer also given...

you sure miss it in a hurry of India bashing ... Pakistan must have some spacial bond with these pirates that they release your people (off-course with ours) becausein this case it seems they not kept their promise & open their mouth for more in greed.
So if they`ll do this in that manner no MALLYA,AMBANI,PREMJI or any sh!t you gives will fill their mouth.

Probably has to do with the pirates being Muslim as well, I think this is going too far - IN should blow up these pirates and assist Kenya which is attacking Somalia.

You are wrong.

The mighty Indian fleets will blockade the Somalians, after that Indian commandos valiant actions will free the prisoners.

Piracy shall cease to exist off the coast of Somalia.

PN should slap IN by rescuing these people.

Our goverment is hopeless,,

No! I think indian government is waiting for Groshkov to be inducted in to IN to take on Somali pirates. Presently there is only vast blue ocean no indian nvay:no:
