RAIPUR: Indian police said Wednesday they had arrested a witchdoctor and his family over the alleged sacrifice of a two-year-old boy in an impoverished tribal area.
The parents of the child alerted police on Tuesday after he went missing while playing on the street in the Durg district of the central state of Chhattisgarh, about 45 kilometres (30 miles) from state capital Raipur.
The witchdoctor, his wife and three children were arrested yesterday after the bloodied body of the child was recovered from their worship place along with the knife used for the crime, district police chief Amit Kumar told AFP.
Kumar added the accused man had said blood stains at his home were the result of him slaughtering a goat. But the police checked the house and found the body of the child covered with a cloth.
In April, in the last widely publicised case of suspected human sacrifice in India, a decapitated body of a factory worker was found in a temple in the eastern state of West Bengal.
Human sacrifices occasionally make headlines in deeply religious and superstitious India, and usually occur in poor rural areas where some people revere practitioners of black magic.
In March, a married couple in rural western India were arrested for allegedly killing five young boys because a mystic told them it would help the woman conceive.
