Several Indian companies are interested to build a deep seaport in Bangladesh, the country’s foreign secretary has told Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The proposal could be executed through a consortium, Hasina said in response when S Jaishankar made a courtesy call on her at Ganabhaban on Wednesday evening.

Bangladesh has already put in play two deep seaports at Maheshkhali’s Sonadia in Cox’s Bazar and at Patuakhali’s Payra.

The government has said that China, Japan, United Arab Emirates and the Netherlands have shown interest in funding these two projects.

Briefing the reporters after Wednesday’s meeting, Hasina’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim said Jaishankar had referred to the bilateral cooperation between India and Bangladesh as ‘a model’ for the world.

“This model is also being appreciated in India,” Karim quoted him as saying.

The visiting Indian foreign secretary also thanked Bangladesh for its support in launching the SAARC Satellite.

Hasina and Jaishankar also discussed supplying power from Tripura to Bangladesh and from Bangladesh to India’s northeast states. They also talked about the Land Boundary Agreement implemented last year.

Both recalled Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic visit to Dhaka in June last year, Karim said.

Hasina said her counterpart’s visit took the bilateral ties between the neighbouring countries to a new height.

Jaishankar told her that New Delhi had made 14 commitments during Modi’s visit and eight of them have been fulfilled already.

He said India was making progress in meeting the other pledges.

Payra in Patuakhali is not a deep seaport although it is close to the ocean i.e. the mouth of the delta.

Only Maheshkhali and Matarbari areas near CXB can accommodate deep draft vessels (around ten meters).

The Navy is planning a submarine base in one of these places and I don't think they will go with the idea of Indians building the deep seaport...

What recent experience does Indian companies have in building a deep seaport? I'm not fully aware of the projects - if any.

I guess JNPT does not count as so recent.

Here are some more recent completed/undergoing ones (panamax draught capability) built/building from scratch:

There are also many older ones that have undergone/undergoing expansion recently like Paradip, JNPT, Kandla, Chennai Vizag etc w.r.t Panamax capability

you are wrong, Patuakhali seaport is deep seaport, Navy is building biggest naval base there which includes submarine base and aviation.
Currently 2 submarine bases under construction: 1. Kolapara in Patuakhali and 2 Pekua in Cox's bazar

Matharbari gone to Japan. Payra to China.

India out. They have experience in river port and can engage in Ashuganj.

Open your computer/mobile browser and type google.com, it's an internet search engine, when the page opens type 'deep sea ports in India' in the search bar on the top of the page, and then check.

Let me know what you see. :)

Happy to help our little neighbour. :)

Help? Heh...

Showing interest is all you guys can afford, nothing beyond this. HAHA.

We will be very happy if our big neighbor build sadarghat terminal

Even Sadarghat like project is not affordable for the Indians. Have you seen any Indian funded constructions in BD? lol. Actually, beggers can beg they cant pay. Difference is there.

I see, not a single Indian port can handle mother vessel. They use mostly feeder vessel to Colombo and Singapore. I also seen Mamata Didi running like a neckless chicken to fund her Kolkata port from Delhi or Dubai..
I also seen India could not complete port in Myanamar after so many years of big talks.

Which extraordinarily big industry or infrastructure project has been done in Bangladesh with foreign or government investment? Investments are done on the basis of feasibility and viability, Bangladesh being one of the most poor countries in the region, it offers little in those terms. :)

Yep, that's Bangladesh in 2050! :D

Keep practicing, you will learn to use internet search engines better.
