Indian-born Bikram yoga founder accused of sexual harassment in US

The founder of Bikram yoga, Bikram Choudhury, has been accused of sexual harassment and assault by a former student in the US.

According to ABC news, 29-year-old Sarah Baughn has claimed in a lawsuit in Los Angeles superior court that the yoga guru approached her and asked her if she could wash his hair.

The former student has further alleged in the suit that the yoga guru on another occasion declared that they were friends from the past life and asked her, "Should we make this into a relationship?"

Baughn has alleged that the yoga guru ruined her career when she rejected his advances.

This isn't the first time that the yoga guru has faced such charges. Last year, he was sued by another woman who accused him of making lewd comments, the report says.

Bikram Yoga is the 26 postures sequence selected and developed by Bikram Choudhury from Hatha Yoga, claims his website.

It involves practicing traditional routines at very hot temperatures. Famous practitioners include David Beckham, Andy Murray, Madonna, George Clooney and Beyonce Knowles.

Born in Kolkata in 1946, Bikram began Yoga at the age of four with India's most-renowned physical culturist at that time, Bishnu Ghosh, the younger brother of Paramahansa Yogananda.

Bikram practiced Yoga at least four to six hours every day at Ghosh's College of Physical Education in Kolkata. At the age of 13, he won the National India Yoga Championship.

Bikram yoga is a very popular form of yoga in the West and its founder being in the news (again) will have a negative impact on yoga's image. Not 'yoga' per se, but the yoga industry in the West.
