SRINAGAR — A senior National Conference leader Thursday dropped a bombshell by claiming that the assembly election of 2002, which are considered as one of the fairest elections in the history of Indian-administered Kashmir, were rigged by Indian Army.
Dr Shiekh Mustafa Kamal, who is the uncle of Kashmir’s chief minister Omar Abdullah, told a Srinagar based news agency that former Indian Army chief General VK Singh had used special Army units who helped Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the largest opposition party of the state, to rig the elections in their favour.
“General VK Singh fulfilled the desire of Mufti Muhammad Sayeed (PDP patron) to occupy the chair of chief minister in the state. Singh was a commander at Awantipora in 2002 and he assigned job to scores of Army officers who rigged the elections and brought Peoples Democratic Party into power,” he said.
Mr Kamal claimed that General Singh had called a meeting of his subordinate Army officials just before the assembly elections of 2002 which was attended by PDP patron Mr Sayeed.
“The strategy to wipe out National Conference from the political scene was chalked out in the meeting. If you don’t believe me, go and ask their own member Molvi Iftikar Hussain Ansari. He would tell you the truth,” Kamal told CNS news agency.
He said PDP was not in favour of moving a privilege motion against General Singh but the party had no option,
“It is finding ways and means to save Singh from humiliation and the party leadership has apprehension that Singh may open Pandora box,” Kamal said.
An Army inquiry recently revealed that Mr Singh had set up an ‘illegal’ unit in Indian Army which provided funds to Kashmir’s agriculture Ghulam Hassan Mir to ‘destabilize’ Omar Abdullah’s government because of his friction with Army commanders over a controversial legislation that gives forces operating in the disputed state a license to kill with accountability.
Mr Singh later claimed that all politicians of Kashmir were on the payrolls of Indian Army since 1947.
