Army plans to acquire Israeli missile defence system

New Delhi, Sept 10: In a move to overcome the vulnerability of its formations to threats from the air, the Army plans to induct the Israeli quick-reaction Spyder Air Defence System, officials sources said.

The Army has finalised plans to acquire four regiments of the Spyder Systems equipped with Derby Surface-to-Air Radar Guided Missiles and Python-5 Infra-Red Missiles from Israel's Rafael Armament Company.

The Army, according to the sources, has finalised the contract and the deal worth about Rs 1,100 crore is awaiting the approval of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS).

The Spyder Systems will be mounted on indigenous Tatra Trucks and replace the Army's Russian-made Osa-Akm and Strela-10m Missile Systems.

The road-mobile Spyder System was developed by Rafael along with the MBT Missile Division and Elta Radar Division. It is capable of countering threats from helicopters, aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles and precision guided munitions.

The system can target aerial threats from one km to 35 km away. A Spyder squadron consists of a mobile command-and- control centre and four mobile firing units, each carrying up to six missiles.

The Python-5 Missile has an imaging infra-red seeker that gives it increased detection range, improved target discrimination against background clutter and a lower false target acquisition rate.

The system has a medium range active radar-guided missile which incorporates programmable ECCM equipment and operates in the lock-on-before-launch mode for short range targets and lock-on-after-launch mode for medium range targets.

Army officials said the existing Russian surface-to-air missile systems would not be phased out and would be used for some more time.

The combination of Tunguska and the Spyder will definetly pose issues for Pakistani Airforce assets involved in BAI (as long as enough systems can be purchased). The more such type of systems are inducted by the IA, the more dependence PAF would have on PGMs to be able to interdict Indian advances.

Another reason as to why PAF needs to get a robust SEAD/DEAD capability soon...the induction of SD-10 would be extremely welcome now in a dedicated SEAD role.

India tests surface-to-air missile

The Trishul (Trident) test comes after New Delhi's nuclear-capable Agni III ballistic missile, with a range of 4,000 kilometres (2,480 miles), failed during a trial launch earlier this month.

Trishul, which was last tested in December, is designed for use by the army, airforce and the navy and can carry a 15-kilogram (33-pound) conventional warhead up to nine kilometers (5.5 miles).

It was tested from the Chandipur-on-Sea range, officials said though they declined to say whether the test was successful or not.

The missile has previously been flight-tested in a sea-skimming role and also against land-based and airborne targets.

India has stepped up the testing of three of the five guided-missile systems it developed as part of an ambitious programme launched in 1983 to become self-reliant in missile technology.

India, which tested a series of nuclear devices in 1998, has already developed and deployed two ballistic missiles and a surface missile.

Nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan have fought three wars, two over the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, and frequently test-fire missiles. Under an agreement, each side is notified in advance of missile tests.

How good is Pakistani defence systems?

Wasn't Pakistan equipping countries like Bangladesh with its own air defence system a while ago?

I really don't know much about Pakistans air-defense capabilities, the only thing I've seen so far were the Chinese liscense HQ-7 mobile SAMs in service and a good number of American made and Chinese liscensed manpads.

By the look's of it, Pakistan should really look into it's best interest in upgrading or developing some kinda decent surface to air missile program pretty soon.

In my opinion between Iran and Pakistan in terms of air-defense capabilities, I give the edge to Iran for their reverse engineering of the Hawk and Rapier missiles. Right now if India decided to fire a Missile on Pakistan..no way can Pakistan stop them . :what1:

Actually a medium range air-defence system is under evaluation by the Pakistan Army currently. Pakistan has more than adequate coverage for low level air defence due to a large # of MANPADs available to the units (Anza mk3 is in the works as well).

HQ-9 comes in handy for long range intercepts. The gap for Pakistan really exists in the medium to long range intercept roles which until now were being fulfilled by Crotale systems (but limited in number).

from what I know, Pakistan is interested in an Italian system (SPADA-2000) and have had talks with the Italians. Hopefully this will work out.

What we provided them was automation of their air defence system (not missiles). The air defence system allows the BD airforce to be able to automate the entire threat assement and processing of these threats out to their airbases for interception. Essentially we tied up their network of radar coverage and automated it for them.

Python-5, is one of deadliest of all short range missiles having the most powerful and active infra-red seeker. If they are getting those missiles with the air-defence system, they could possibly be able to make it compatible with their aircrafts as well.

India has already signed an agreement with Israel to acquire 18 Spyder Surface to Air Missiles systems .It is one of the most effective systems around and I am sure it is made by RAFAEL
