Indian police have arrested a senior Indian Army official in Mumbai for disseminating child pornography over the Internet, a senior police official said Friday.
"Lt. Colonel Jagmohan Balbir Singh has been arrested in Mumbai for child pornography for allegedly downloading pornographic photos of foreign children between the ages of three and 10 on the Internet. He was produced before the court which has remanded him to police custody till May 12," the official said.
The arrest followed a tip-off from the Interpol which was alerted by the German Federal Bureau which spotted the photos on a child pornography site and traced the pictures to India, he said, adding that two hard disk drives from 42-year-old Singh's house have been seized.
However, the Army official's lawyer Milind Sawant argued that his client's custody was not required as the police have already seized the required evidence.
"Singh is a serving Army officer and a respectable man and would not abscond and fully cooperate with the police," he said.
