Indian army land being used for golf courses

Posted on March 28, 2011 by NZ, Auditing, Investing and Golf
From ft.com:

“India’s national auditor has slammed the country’s army for turning large tracts of state military property into illegal privately run golf courses and leisure centres without paying rent to the government, costing the exchequer millions of dollars in lost revenue.

The damning audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), which has already exposed $39bn of irregularities in the telecoms sector, adds to the pressure on the Congress party-led government of prime minister Manmohan Singh.”

“

The CAG said a privately held company controlled by army officials ran 97 golf courses on more than 8,000 acres of land owned by the Ministry of Defence, the biggest government landowner.

It also revealed that army commanders had procured 27 golf carts two years ago by passing them off as mechanised wheelchairs for military hospitals and as track alignment reconnaissance vehicles for sapper units.”

^^ Yeah.. heard it yesterday in the morning daily. Really pissing off, the amount of corruption in IA has risen to enormous levels.

It is un-realistic to expect the Indian Armed Forces to be not corrupt when the entire country seems to be drowning in it. If any thing Army demonstrates they are as much decayed as rest of the society. It is very unsettling, the lack of action in Adarsh Society scam and lack of accountability or punishment when caught, is just mind boggling.

One more thing that will go under the rug, the cast will pull its age of act, of Parliamentary lockdown, and same comments from party spokesperson that "you do not have the moral authority" etc.

With the current trajectory, India is royally screwed, given the unequal growth, the social unrest will spike

Exactly Bro....corruption is not new but its not a good sign when it has crept in the military. Everyone blames AK Anthony but nobody knows the amount of crap he has to change within the institution in order to put INdia on the right track. Corruption has been institutionalized.....and Kapoor should be arrested. Giving this guy a slap on the wrist is ludricous. Taking away a pension is only one minor step, in a series of actions that HAS to be taken.

Look at the bright side. At lease the Indian army will have an excellent chance of beating everyone else in... golf...

I think IA has huge property since British era, sometimes I feel unnecessarily. I do not know about other places, but in Kolkata, whole maidan area belongs to army (an area bigger many of our towns). Ground of Kolkata based clubs like Mohanbagan, east-bengal etc actually belong to army. So the clubs are not allowed to build any concrete structures. Even Kolkata race course included in the list. One plus point is that we still have a large green area at the heart of the city.
