Indian Army DNA profiling centre inaugurated, to play repository of 1.13 million armed forces personnel
A repository of 1.13 million armed forces personnel will be set up at the DNA Profiling Centre and Repository inaugurated by the Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) Lt Gen H L Kakria on the 60th armed forces medical conference in the city on Wednesday.
Addressing the media, Lt Gen Kakria said, This small step today will have a large impact tomorrow in helping us identify soldiers who lost in battle and cannot be identified. Initially, a pilot project will be launched with collection of 1,000 blood samples from forward areas.
The Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology will have a repository/data bank of DNA profile of armed forces personnel employed in hazardous duties.
We want to extend the facility to all our 1.13 million armed forces personnel. The centre will also be useful for research as we will be able to identify diseases that are hereditary and have a genetic bearing, said Surgeon Vice Admiral K M Suryanarayana, Director General, Medical Services (Navy).
Set up at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore, the profiling centre is unique as so far only USA and Israel have such facilities. The identity of the dead body can be easily established by DNA profiling once the DNA profile of the individual is available in a data bank with the authorities.
The DGAFMS also expressed concern over lifestyle diseases, specially cancer, both in the armed forces and across the country. While medical check-ups are conducted for the armed forces personnel annually, now, medical examination will also be conducted every five years for diseases like hypertension and diabetes, said Lt Gen G Ramdas, Director General Medical Services (Army).
The inaugural ceremony witnessed release of the golden jubilee souvenir as well as a compendium of completed AFMRC Projects.
Six award winning AFMRC research projects were presented at the ceremony. Since the first project on artificial limbs was launched, the AFMRC has sanctioned and guided over 4,000 research projects and from Rs 43.69 lakh sanctioned for research activities in 1994-95 the financial support has touched close to Rs 5 crore in 2010- 2011.
