Indian Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat welcomed peace talks with the Afghan Taliban as long as they did not have any "preconditions" attached to them, The Hindu reported on Wednesday.

Rawat was speaking at the Raisina Dialogue — an annual multilateral conference arranged in New Delhi jointly by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and the Observer Research Foundation, a think tank in India.

"Yes, there should be talks with Taliban as long as they do not come out with any preconditions, and so long as they are looking at lasting peace in Afghanistan and bring stability in that country," he explained.

Rawat admitted that peace in Afghanistan was "in [India's] interest, in the region's interest and in Pakistan's interest" but added: "When you start attaching preconditions, it gives a sense of a notional victory that one or the other side is talking from a position of strength."

He claimed that Pakistan treated Afghanistan as its "backyard" and was therefore striving to reach a solution to the Afghan conflict that would suit itself.

Pakistan has been working closely with Kabul and Washington to reach a political settlement to the Afghan conflict. The government has facilitated talks between the Taliban and US officials, and Pakistani leadership has reiterated its resolve to reach a peaceful solution to the 17-year-long war.

Is this that India will have a say so strong that they can convince US OR put pressure on Taliban for any preconditions?

Talking about the Afghan peace talks, Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat said that “talks with Taliban are welcome in the interest of stability in Afghanistan as long as there are no preconditions”.

“Yes, there should be talks with the Taliban as long as they do not come out with any preconditions and so long as they are looking at a lasting peace in Afghanistan and bring stability in that country. It is in our interest, in the region’s interest and in Pakistan’s interest,” Gen Rawat said during a discussion on countering terrorism at the on-going Raisina Dialogue jointly organised by the Observer Research Foundation and Ministry of External Affairs.

Stressing that when talking to terrorists or any organisation of that kind, it has to be without preconditions, Gen Rawat stated: “When you start attaching preconditions, it gives a sense of a national victory that one or the other side is taking from a position of strength.”

He observed that as Pakistan considers Afghanistan as its backyard, they always want a situation there (Afghanistan) which is more favourable to them, reported The Hindu.

India has accepted Iranian offer of setting up a Taliban-Indian govt meeting. Taliban requested Iran for such a setup.

Iran will soon facilate the first meeting between Indian govt and Taliban.

Last time India met Taliban was in March 2001 when India's ambassador to UAE met Taliban deputy foreign minister in Abu Dhabi.

"Talking to terrorists or any organizations of that kind."

Guess he will soon find what kind of organizations he is dealing with when the Americans are done with.
Because Americans too were pretty jumpy referring to them as terrorists. But time...

.
Why they are talking to terrorists now? Where did "We don't talk to terrorists" go?

they are desperate for a talk now as they have been ignored totally

secondly Talibans doesn't give much shit to Americans when it comes to the talk so India ? seriously ? its India who wants to talk as well but I don't think Talibans will like to even sit with them as they were the ones who used to back every anti-taliban move in the region.

Army Chief bats for Talks with Taliban!
There should be negotiations with Taliban, but without conditions: Gen Rawat on Afghan peace process.
Army Chief's call for talks with Taliban is in sharp contrast with India's official stand.#TalibanTalks @adgpi @SushmaSwaraj

It is clear, Indian foreign policy is now derived by Indian Army/militarily establishment. Chotah aadmi being chotah for ever, has nothing much to do now.
