An Air Force one-star general who grew up in Lompoc has a new job.
Brig. Gen. Balan R. Ayyar will become the rule of law deputy for U.S. Forces-Afghanistan with U.S. Central Command in Kabul, Afghanistan, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III announced recently.
Since September 2010, Ayyar has served as commander of the Air Force Recruiting Service and director of recruiting at Air Education and Training Command Headquarters at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas.
Ayyar, a native of Buffalo, N.Y., grew up in Lompoc, attending Miguelito and Hapgood elementary schools and Lompoc Junior High School.
The former paperboy recalled a wonderful hometown experience growing up for 10 years in Lompoc.
After spending his freshman and sophomore years at Lompoc High School, Ayyars family moved to Wichita, Kan., where he graduated from Wichita Southeast High School with the class of 1983.
After high school he went to the Air Force Academy and graduated in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science degree in international affairs.
Ayyar attended pilot training before landing an assignment in a C-141B.
Since then, he has logged 3,500 hours flying a variety of planes including KC-135R, C-17A and KC-10A. He also had the unique experience of serving as exchange instructor pilot in the Indian air force.
It was an especially poignant assignment, he recalled, as he proudly
represented his country and the U.S. Air Force while serving in the land where his parents had emigrated from decades earlier.
He and his wife of more than two decades have three children.
