The Indian Air Force (IAF) has confirmed that it will re-engine its fleet of Anglo-French Jaguar strike aircraft. The plan was discussed by IAF Chief of Air Staff Arup Raha during his annual press conference this week. Raha was enthusiastic about the recently confirmed acquisition of Dassault Rafales, but cautious on progress with the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) project with Russia.

“Technology is improving so rapidly that weapon systems and platforms soon become redundant,” said Raha. This phenomenon is being addressed through the IAF’s Long Term Perspective Plan, a 15-year scheme that is divided into three five-year spans. Raha said that while most previous procurement “had been process-driven; it is now changing to outcome-driven.”

Honeywell is to supply 270 F125IN turbofan engines to replace the twin Rolls-Royce Adour Mk 821s on apporoximately 120 Jaguars. The F125 is 600 pounds lighter and should enable 25-percent-shorter hot-and-high takeoffs. Raha said India’s Jaguars have become overweight and underpowered because of avionics and systems upgrades. Honeywell will first be required to conduct a trial modification of the Jaguars with the new engines. The plan was first mooted in 2012.

Full of praise for the Rafale, for which the IAF has signed a contract for 36, Raha added: “We’d like more, but the decision has to be taken in the near future based on capability and price.” Other officials in the IAF told AIN that the version for India would be more lethal than the French and other recent international versions.

An Inter-Governmental Agreement was signed for co-production of the FGFA. But now that the IAF has completed a design review, it has “found gaps in information in terms of the depth and transfer of technology…and a lack of visibility of total cost,” said Raha. While things are now clearer, “let us see what happens,” he added.

The IAF combat fighter inventory includes 270 Su-30MKIs. An official said: “Ordering more will not be wise. We should not have all our eggs in one basket.”

Live firing of the air-to-ground version of the Brahmos missile on the modified Sukhoi Su-30 MKI will be finished in three months.

Aiming to boost its capability for local production via a transfer of technology, India has received “unsolicited offers for the Gripen, F-16, and F-18. Whoever gives the best deal will get the contract,” said Raha. Meanwhile, deliveries of the 80 indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk1 version will not be completed until 2028.

Jaguars should be good enough for ground attack roles

Yes except the re - engine plans are always on the table, just the question of when it will be finalized!

Fun Fact : The Engine is a drop fit - thus no mods needs on existing frames!

This should have been a priority

I think that since we were already making the Current engines ; Many spare engines are lying around

Hence this delay ; first use the old stock ;then get new engines

Jaguars recently went all the way upto Alaska for Red Flag

I have been following the Jaguars engine upgrade for a long time. True that they are license producing it , but with one crash and another caught fire just this year , waiting isn't an option

Also did read that the reason Rolls Royce lost the tender because they were to upgrade the existing engines and not build all new engines which the IAF wanted!

IAF wanted to replace the Jaguar with Rafale and hence they dragged the life extension process, but looks like they will now have to settle for a re-engine Jaguar.

Looks like Manohar Parrikar has delivered another swift kick up the IAF chief and is holding him to RESULTS and not allowing him to blame the 'process'.

The DARIN III program was always in the cards much before the MMRCA and the re-engine is always part of that program (see above video dated 2009)

YES HAVE to blame the PROCESS here, cause only 2 manufacturers quoted for tender i.e Rolls Royce and Honeywell. This Tender asked for an ALL NEW built engine, which Rolls Royce wasn't ready to do as their solution was to upgrade and refurbish existing engines in the IAF fleet, thus they backed out - leaving only Honeywell i.e only one vendor solution - which is NOT ALLOWED in our Defence procurement process

YES Blame the PROCESS!

that is very interesting

Probably a new radar is also planned . Should make this worthy for another 2 decades for DPSA role.

Process exist to serve the system, the system does not exist to serve the process.

Anyone who used to take refuge under the 'process' to hide their own agenda or incompetence is being stripped naked by the Modi govt.

MMRCA has been scrapped and a decision taken because the IAF gave it more priority and hoped to replace the DARIN III program with more Rafale.

Other wise even the M777 gun is a single vendor contract, but that did not stop the IA from going for it. Same is true for P-8I and C-17. No competitors were entertained.

So its not like they 'process' became a bottleneck when they really wanted something. Its just a convenience scapegoat to hide agendas of vested interests.

Just watch now how the same single vendor situation will suddenly have no obstacle in the defence procurement process. Everything remains the same, except now there is a RM who is ready to kick the IAF chief's @ss if he does not perform or deliver. THAT is the only difference.

LEADERSHIP makes all the difference in the world.

For the DARIN-3 upgrade programme (which was approved in 2008), an initial 58 single-seat Jaguar IS aircraft will be subjected to a ‘deep upgrade’ by HALBIT Avionics along with HAL’s Mission & Combat System Research & Design Centre (MCSRDC), Overhaul Division, and the IAF’s Aircraft & Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE) and Software Development Institute (SDI). The first prototype of the DARIN 3-standard Jaguar IS took to the skies on November 28, 2012. Each DARIN 3-standard Jaguar IS will be fitted between 2014 and 2017 with ELTA-supplied EL/M-2032 multi-mode pulse-Doppler radar, HAL-Edgewood’s OSAMC core avionics computer, Elbit Systems’ Targo HMDS, EL/M-8022 jammer, BDL-built CMDS, SaabTech’s RWRs and LWRs, EADS/Cassidian’s MILDS-F MAWS, and Raytheon-supplied munitions control unit (MCU) for making the aircraft’s weapons management system compatible with the 15 different types of munitions that have been specified by the IAF. Following this, the IAF’s seven DARIN 1-standard Jaguar IMs too will be retrofitted with DARIN 3-standard avionics.

STOP Mixing Contracts and GET your FACTS correct!

the P8 and C17 are both FMS , ie govt to govt. NO TENDER Involved!

The Ultra Light Guns system was between BAE and ST Kinetics - THIS TENDER again was cancelled and went through FMS route

ONLY THE REQUIREMENTS and eventually the Test and selection is done by the IAF.

The actual PROCUREMENT PROCESS is done by the MoD. IT IS their process and negotiation that will buy or cancel the DEAL.

Ever heard of the Defence Aquisition Council. WHO heads this??? - guess??? why it is chaired by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar

Please do some research and read before commenting !

All acquisition takes the path of least resistance unless there is malefic intentions. When intentions are not good then all kind of 'process' becomes a hurdle for acquisition.

Engines of IN submarines and ships are all from single vendor situation. harpoons are brought from the US under single vendor case. Tanks are brought from Russia under single vendor situation. You will find millions of such example if only you bother to look. If the IAF really wanted, even the re-engine of Jaguar cold have been done under the FMS. IF THEY REALLY WANTED.

Mirage 2000 upgrade too went to single vendor situation after Israel proposal was discarded.

The new DPP under Manohar Parrikar has been modified to accommodate single vendor situation. THAT is the difference.

BOSS that is the POINT , WHO Makes the decision on the FMS??? definitely NOT THE IAF!, so STOP pointing the finger at THEM... its the MoD (DAC) who make the final decisions on ANY procurement !.... Have u followed the Rafale deal ?? negotiations are done by who the MoD or the IAF?
