I maybe wrong BUT I get the impression that FGFA or indian version of the PAK FA is now not happening .

Russias is refusing to share all the technology or give India ownership rights

India is convinced that PAK FA lacks too much in current guise and not worth the money AND will not pay $4 billion in development cost upfront without no ownership rights..

My question too ALL friends in light of three key events RE iaf procurement plans WHAT will the IAF look like in ten years time ..... AND IS THIS GOOD ENOUGH TO DEFEND INDIAN SKYS from likely foes.

THE THREE KEY EVENTS ARE.

1. Rafale goes to 36 planes only Govt to govt deal NO license manufacture or TOT
2. Tejas will be arriving in form of mk1a 120 planes regardless of IAF reservations to boost make in india
3. FGFA and PAK FA will be shelved for now until IAF seems the PAK FA in Russian service or a prototype in india.

Sir, FGFA is happening via a JV route but it will be delayed more to 2027-30timeline.. Reason being heart of pamfa is not ready yet and with 3 prototype the whole testing phase will be long as its essentially a new aircraft derived from PAKFA..

Rafale beyond 36 will co e surely as part of MII but after DPP2016 is defined. That's the DPP that says the force which is procuring will define where the offsets r to happen and what tech to be asked for..this is how Dassault will help LCA program

Tejas program will see some more movement closer to its FOC. The private sector participation is getting discussed and we may see a new line too provided a extensive order is placed..( beyond present order)

At this stage By guess is by 2025

36 rafale F3 = 2 sqds only
50 mirage2000-5 = 3 sqds
70 jaguar darin upgrades = 4 sqds 150 European origin planes

270 SU30MKI = 14 sqds
60 mig29smt = 3 sqds 330 Russian origin planes

120 Tejas mk1a = 6 sqds 120 Indian indengious planes

Rafale will carry French aesa radars and meterore & mica BVRS and scalp cruise missles

Su30mki about half will be upgraded to super mki = ibris aesa radar and KS172 novator ramjet bvr

Tejas MKI1A will carry elta Aesa radars & Astra BVRs.

Mirage 2000 rc400 MSA radars but MICA BVRs

imo good air force BUT NO 5TH GENERATION CAPABILITY

HAL offically stated the FGFA is coming a few days back- forget what the Indian presstitues are spouting.

+ I think there is a general misconception of what the FGFA is. The FGFA is simply the designation for the Indian PAK-FA as the MKI is for the Su-27/30 family. Remember the path the MKI took to be born- the IAF made its specifications clear and Indian industry (HAL) worked with Sukhoi to develop the bird that met their needs as such they fitted more advanced avionics from France, Israel and India, Indian sub-systems, canards etc etc. The FGFA is going to be a similar product- an IAF specific version, an "MKIsed" PAK-FA.

The PAK-FA will ALWAYS have to be customised for India- Indian IFFs, data links, sub-systems etc and thus the FGFA will ALWAYS be a reality. The problem lays in the IAF demand for a twin seat FGFA variant and it is hear that trouble may arise. So the twin seat variant may never enter service but the FGFA will most certainly.

My understanding the Indians are not willinmg to part with with $4 billion upfront for PAK FA indian version .

The Indians feel the Russians are trying to get india to bank roll the future development of pak fa but inturn india gets no share or benefits. NOT even technology sharing

HAL LUH, LCH, Tejas Mk1a- Mk2, Rafael, Saras , MTA-214, Rustom-2in active service.
AMCA, MLH, Tejas Mk3(probably), RTA-70, RTA-90, DRDO AURA introduced recently.

.
Makes no point in acquiring such an expensive aircraft and invest in its development if IAF still has to rely on Russia for parts and maintenance.

Lack of full ToT was the reason Rafale deal slumped from 126 fighters to just 36.

I see the same happening with PAK-FA unless Russia starts using its brains.

.
I do think india will need to go through. the diffcult learn curve of ibdengious aéro industry .

Thst means no more paying russia billions and bank rolling sukhoi

I often open old threads and links of Future of Indian Air force, and after reading content I just smile :-)

By 2020 IAF was supposed to consists of

272 Su30MKI
124 Rafale
144 Su50
FGFA
AMCA
Tejas Mk1 & Mk2

Things are going BIT different now :azn:

India should go for JV with Japan for 5th Gen fighter aircraft. Mitsubishi ATD-X Shinshin is already a demonstrator and Japanese can get lots of off the shelf tech from USA & EU. They can go for JF-17 route and can save lot of time.

Joining japan 5th generation project makes more sense then any other project

270+ some MKIs, Super MKIs
70 some MIG UPGs
48 Mirage 2000 UPGs
a sum amount of Rafales
a sum amount of PAK FAs
ground and naval support Jaguars

Addition of several more AWACs system
Addition of several more transport ACs
Addition of several more tankers

Addition and up gradation of SAM network

Coordination and support from India's current and future aircraft carrier wing, MIG 29Ks.

And most importantly, a military budget that's continuing to swell to support IAFs growth - Something which it never had before. Historically many airforces were a head of India's, it can handle itself.

It wasnt. The French didnt want to partner with HAL, nor did want to take any responsibility for HAL produced Rafales.

Dassault wanted to work the Indian Reliance. This might happen now, because they're not hand cuffed to HAL anymore. And are talking with Reliance to make their regional planes and even Rafales if India extends it's order.
