NEW DELHI: India made an impressive start to the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship by bagging 15 medals, including 11 golds, on the opening day at Apia, Samoa on Wednesday.
Khumukcham Sanjita Chanu and Minati Sethi led the Indian gold rush in senior women's 48kg and 58kg categories while Ranjit K Chinchwade won a yellow metal in senior men's 56kg.
Sanjita lifted a total of 154kg (64+90) while Minati and Ranjit had efforts of 175kg (75+100) and 224kg (99+125) respectively.
The Commonwealth Championship is being held for Youth (boys and girls), Junior (men and women) and Senior (men and women) categories simultaneously.
Other gold medal winners are Atom Indubala Chanu (48kg), Erra Deexitha (53kg) and S Thansana Chanu (58kg) in youth girls, Jamjang Deru (50kg) and Aruna Santa (56kg) in youth boys Katila Venkata Lakshmi (53kg) and N Sumanbala Devi (58kg) in junior women and M S Karthik (56kg) in junior men's category.
Tikina Gopal and N Sumanbala Devi won silver in senior women's 53kg and 58kg categories while M S Muneera bagged the same metal in 58kg Youth Girls category.
The lone bronze medal was won by Katila Venkata Lakshmi in senior women's 53 kg category.
