Interesting comparison came to mind. I've been to Vietnam in 2008, and comparing images of Vietnam to India today, I would say they are quite similar in terms of infrastructure development level.

Also, comparing GDP per capita, the two are almost identical, as per the following:

India vs Vietnam Economy Stats Compared

What are your thoughts on the two nations, in terms of overall developement when put side by side?

. . . . . .
I have much respect for Vietnam and my Vietnamese brothers and sisters.

They have better social/human development (literacy, health) than India....though parts of India are about the same or even better on various things in this field....but other areas are much worse (though improving now thankfully). India will take 10 - 20 years to catch up here on the whole I feel.

India can be thought of as many countries in one basically....even within its constituent states (esp the large ones)

It is the economies of scale that India can achieve (and is achieving) that is helping to prop up Indian statistics when it comes to the economy. Vietnam has only a finite amount of that relatively speaking (though a lot more than most countries of the world). Economy wise both should be neck and neck for quite some years (GDP per capita) barring some major miracle or collapse....but of course the sum total will be much more immense in India given its population and this may give an edge to India esp for industries where economies of scale really come into play.

Long term growth and maturity of both countries is very positive, both can learn from each other, cooperate and ensure win-win development.

The numbers from the site posted by OP are a little old now.
