The maiden test launch of Agni-II Plus, a nuclear-capable surface-to-surface missile with a strike range of 2,500 km to 3,000 km, ended in a massive failure after the missile dropped off ito the sea a few seconds after it was launched from Wheeler Island off coastal waters of Orissa on Bay of Bengal at 10 am.

The Agni-II Plus, a modified version of Agni-II, is an intermediary between Agni-II and Agni-III. It has two stages and both are powered by solid propellants.

DRDO sources said soon after the missile took off, it dropped into the sea. "We are still investigating how it happened," said a source. Today's failure comes in the wake of a similar failure of Prithvi-II missile on September 24 that dropped off just a few seconds after the launch. The failure comes 10 days after the successful flight of surface-to-surface missile Agni-1 on Nov 25.

Agni-II plus missile test fails in Orissa

India test-fired an upgraded version of the Agni-II nuclear-capable intermediate range ballistic missile off the Orissa coast. The test was declared a failure.

The latest version of the "Agni" series missile is described as a two-stage, solid propellant rail and road mobile missile.

Scientists at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said "the modified version of Agni-II will have better accuracy and range."

While the present Agni-II missile has a strike range of 2000 km and Agni-III can target a distance up to 3500 km, the strategic new missile, Agni-II plus or premier would bridge the gap between Agni-II and Agni-III, a defence source said.

Hope they explain what went wrong in the test but given the modified version has many new parts could be a number of factors.

Well well well.... I agree now that this is a New missile Indeed, But what could have gone wrong here?? Dont the Engineers Pre Check it before the Launch? Or is there any Change in Navigational systems or Missile Computer or Softwares... And Was this a Technology Demonstrator?

It is sentiment for our rocket system to fail in first test:-)
look PSLV agni GSLV etc etc. . So no worry:D

success is what we gain from experience ,
and experience is what we gain from failures.
keep your good work going guys

^ Too many failures off late for Agni series.

I am now concerned abt AGni V.

One more failure and I will start doubting Tessy Thomas' ability.
