Come 2016 and India will start inducting the first of the 126 combat jets it is purchasing for nearly $20 billion, parliament was informed Monday. The first squadron of the medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) will comprise 18 Rafale aircraft that will be purchased in a fly-away condition from French manufacturer Dassault Aviation. The remaining aircraft will be progressively manufactured in India byHindustan Aeronautics Limited, with the last of them being inducted before the end of 2023.
The Rafale was chosen after beating off stiff competition from five other aircraft.

“The first squadron of MMRCA consisting of 18 aircraft is expected to be inducted within three to four years of signing the contract,” Antony told the Lok Sabha during question hour.

The deal is expected to be sealed before the end of 2012, as cost negotiations are on with Dassault Aviation.

what 2016 ???, god knows how many migs would last till that day .Thoda jaldi induct karo na mere baap:hitwall:

^^^ MiG-21 (non upgraded) have already started to be phased out after 2014 the bisons should start to be phased out and by 2017 the entire MiG-21 fleet will have been retired and by that time we would have a squadron of LCAMK2 and MMRCA so if you ask me it seems to be on time with AF schedule.

^^^^^ unfortunatley what would be our squadron strength by that time if we phase out all MIg 21 & induct MMRCA in
2016.:undecided:

20 billion $ for 126 that's more than 158 million $ seems there's something fishy something been arranged between the Indian and the French.

Last Aircraft in 2023 , From 2018 China Start inducting Fifth Gen. aircraft.....Do it fast..

Dont worry at around that time Rafale would certainly evolve into 5.5 gen with the great technology from France... its common sense.

40 LCA MK1 would already be in service in 2017 the LCA MK2 MMRCA would also start production not to mention so would production of the FGFA

FGFA will be inducted into IAF service in 2017. so no need to worry not to mention AMCA would enter production around the 2025-2030 time frame

With due respect stealth means all together new Air-Frame....F-16 cannot be turned into a 5 generation Aircraft, no??

Precisely.... An internal ammo bay is a must. But probably PAF KA has also enter the same service time of J-20. When Indian is going to induct them?

Well that depends on when the fighter will be ready...The only thing we can say for sure is that being a 50% stake holder in the program we will inducting the fighter at the same time when Russians will be doing it...The proposed timelines are 2016-2017...

Nothing "fishy" as the price also includes setting up of logistics, weapon packages, training and delivering a HIGHLY advanced version of the Rafale that no other nation will get.

2016 is too late, at that time, j20 will be in service. If India could get Pakfa before 2017, no reason for them to bring in Rafale in such huge cost. It still doubt whether Russian air force could put Pakfa into service before 2017, not to mention India.
