India to gift military equipment to Sri Lanka

India is expected to gift some military equipment such as shoulder-fired missiles and radars to Sri Lanka, as a goodwill gesture, when defence secretary Pradeep Kumar undertakes a two-day visit to Colombo from Monday, the PTI reported.

The equipment, part of the assistance provided to Sri Lanka to fight LTTE, is planned to be gifted apparently to demonstrate India's efforts to help build the defence capabilities of the Island nation in the backdrop of Chinese attempts to make inroads there.

India had provided defence hardware including two ground-based radars and a large number of Russian shoulder-fired IGLA ground-to-air missiles to Sri Lanka on a temporary basis, sources said.

India had also lent a coast guard vessel to Sri Lankan Navy during the war but it was not clear whether this would also be gifted.

Some IAF personnel were also deployed there to operate the systems, which were meant only for helping the Sri Lankan armed forces in defending their bases and not for offensive roles, they added.

Kumar, who will hold talks with his counterpart Gotabhaya Rajapakse, is also likely to discuss the future defence requirements of the Sri Lankan armed forces.

Please don't talk if you don't know the entire thing.India supplied a couple of Mil helicopters to Lanka.India also gave one ship to the Lankan navy.Lankan soldiers regularly trained at Indian academies.Most importantly we send a peace keeping force to quell the rebellion.

you are right ganga. Rajeev Gandhi send peace keeping force to assist srilankans.we gave them assistance so they can defeat LTTE.

Perhaps Tamil fisherman from Tamil Nadu should stop poaching in Sri Lankan waters.

During the war they were busy gun running for the Tamil Tigers and transporting arms and explosives between Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka while the Tamil Nadu authorities turned a blind eye.

Tamil politicians in Tamil Nadu need to ensure that their fisherman stay out of Sri Lankan waters.

Sri Lankan Paramilitary and Navy often send their personnel at Indian Naval Academies down south. This has been going on for quite some time now.

Indian Navy and Sri Lankan Navy are the most cooperating navies in South Asia.

Look buddy, they were there people. If your aunt or uncle is being hunted down by the army as well as the militants, then they had to do something to protect them. But that doesn't mean Indian govt. was against your govt.
