What's new

India to enter high-speed internet era with Isro's new satellites

Honestly, Anything above 2 Mbps is a waste for most of the users. 2 Mbps works for every application except Hi-Def video, for which you can get 8 Mbps + in India quite cheaply.

I am on a 40 Mbps connection in India and can watch movies in HD without any lag what so ever

I'm getting 20mbps unlimited for 800 bucks in Delhi though i'm looking to switch to other ISP which can provide same plan for 700 INR.

Plus INR 2000 for 40 Mbps for 200 GB data. Much cheaper than many US fibre connection.

And lets not even talk about Canada

http://www.bell.ca/Bell_Internet/Internet_access

25 Mbps 350 GB monthly cap for 75 CAD? Thats highway robbery.

Indian cities have better broadband connections compared to Canada.
Super expensive.....
I can't believe you pay such huge money for so little data.
75 cad is a very small money for Canadians, less than one day's salary.
2000 rupees for a tiny 200GB? OMG, you r being ripped off even your income is extremely low.
(I guess PPP does not really work here)

Tell that to canadians. 75 CAD for 25 Mbps 350 GB plan is a pure loot.

Indian broadband prices are very much comparable to Chinese ones. Shanghai has 100 Mbps connection for 1900 RMB for one year minimum. Same as Delhi 100 Mbps connection for INR 1600 per month if you go for one year.

R u seriously trolling?

In Shanghai where internet is the most expensive in China, it costs 1900yuan per year according to your link, then it is 160yuan per month, and it is unlimited (all broadband networks in China only provide unlimited package). And do you know the income difference???

The plan provided by Shanghai Telecom (the most expensive provider) in 2017
http://sh.189.net.cn/taocan/
50M, 1400yuan per year
200M, 1900yuan per year
Unlimited data

In my city where the GDP per capita is $20000 (not PPP), it costs 1380yuan for 3 years, 100M, including online TV.

This is typical first-world indian trolling....that brags about affordable broadband....
Do these people know the real living standards and incomes of the majority indians?

It is not.
50M unlimited data in my city (GDP per capita $20000) costs 1180yuan/3years.
That's 320 rupees per month.....

In rural China, it will be much cheaper than that.

I am talking about optic fibre.....

Who cares it is unlimited? After 200 GB I never had to run into usage limit and I almost exclusive watch movies, news etc via internet.

GDP nominal means nothing, nominal does not adjust for inflation. It is a worthless measure for comparision, especially for quality of life. People don't produce or eat dollars, they deal exclusively in local currencies and with real world goods and services. Do not derail the thread by bringing stupid nominal GDP in the conversation.

The thread is about broadband. If you want to harp about other stupid things, create a new one.

If I use PPP, that it would be $40000, thanks.

According to the much hyped PPP theory, you should pay way smaller than INR1600 per month....
How can people in india afford that?
So expensive for only 200GB....and poor people brag about it....LMAO

Good to hear that. Mine also optic fibre. I think with new initiatives and more number of internet subscribers the thing will improve. We pay per month here and are not bound by 3 year contract. The internet is unlimited and torrent gives 20 Mbps speed.

Actually India is joining AAE-1, a 40 Tbps cable with much higher capacity than SMW-5.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AAE-1
http://www.aaeone.com/

Reliance seems to be the landing station in Mumbai.

SMW-5 was a having a proposed landing point at Mumbai but it never materialized.

That one is privately owned by Reliance and not the GOI.
Monopoly in the works, wait for some time for Mukesh to jack up the prices.
What can the government owned BSNL do to compete?

GDP nominal means nothing, nominal does not adjust for inflation.

How does the US adjust for inflation? In PPP? what PPP?

There are other players to take care of the monopoly. Could you ever believe that doler energy would cost 2.5 bucks per unit?

I have 100 mBps and paying $75. That's peanuts to me. To Indian MBA working in Mumbai, its half his salary per month.

.
The Difference between Poor and Rich in India is so Contrast.
Stable Internet connection only for Rich people in there.
Poor people in India, only can afford Slow motion and unstable internet
So, you define 6 Mbps unlimited for $5 per month with 99.99% uptime as slow motion and unstable internet? I am from a village of one of the poorest part of India and almost 70% household in my village have an internet connection wireless or wired.

I have 100 mBps and paying $75. That's peanuts to me. To Indian MBA working in Mumbai, its half his salary per month.
It may be peanuts to you. But I don't agree with your second sentence, don't use thread derailing words.

There is an all out pricing war in India, thanks to JIO who started it all.

The prices are damn cheap for 4G.

For 3 hundred rupees I was getting 1GB of 4G data every day for 28 days.

So that way I had no option but to return my modem to Asia Net Alleppey. They never gave me back my 3K towards the Modem that I paid.

I started giving tethered support to my laptop from my hand phone.
Cheaper this way.

Oh balls. What a bare faced liar.

Jio was free for 6 months, and then it cost 300 bucks for the next 3 months, 1GB/day. I know because I used it.

Even the current offer is "All Unlimited at 309 for three months".
