India to develop smaller missile: Brahmos Aerospace chief

India planned to develop a smaller missile with advance technologies under Vision 2050 Programme, a top official of Brahmos Aerospace said here on Friday.

"We have got three major programmes (under Vision 2050). One major programme is to develop, a smaller missile which has same characteristics of larger missile", BrahmosAerospace CEO and managing director A Sivathanu Pillai said.

The proposed missile with advance technology would be smaller in size and low weight but have "better capability," he told reporters here on the sidelines of fifth edition of Tamil Nadu Manufacturing Summit, organized by the CII.

"These are the new concept which we are doing. We (India) will be the first in the world to create such a wonderful mission (Vision 2050)," he said.

The second programme would focus on increasing the speed of the missiles. "In supersonic (missiles) we have taken leadership across the globe. Now we want to be a leader in hypersonic (missiles)", he said.

"Third important project, which we wanted to do is integrating the technologies with space. Today space has become a very important arena for working. You cannot forget about space. So, we are going to have integrated weapon satellite ground communication and different deployment scenarios into one", he said.

Elaborating he said the concept was "with minimum power, we can make maximum damage to enemy. That is the new concept which we are working.."

Noting that India's spending on research and development was "less" compared to any other country, he said, "it is not difficult thing to invest. What we have to do is, we have to get high technology".

Referring to Brahmos, he said "We have invested US$ 300 million (about Rs 1,500 crore) so far, but our business today is Rs 25,000 crore that is nearly US$ five to six billion", he said.

He said India has potential to do business about US$ 100 billion at the global level. Indian cruise missiles were ranked number one compared to the United States' - Tomahawk missile, he said.

He said India has potential to do business about US$ 100 billion at the global level. Indian cruise missiles were ranked number one compared to the United States' - Tomahawk missile, he said.

Is it only me or someone else also think that he went a little to far there.

Yeah, both the Tomahawk and Brahmos are different class missile. The Tomahawk is more of long range slower speed missile. While the Brahmos is a faster and shorter range. Then there is the whole issue of neither of the countries whether it be US or India can't sell the respective missiles, since the MTCR prohibits the sale of missile of range greater than what there is for Brahmos. As for Brahmos, the missile is a JV between India and Russia, so we can't really sell it without getting their approval. Unless we decide to replace their parts with our own developed parts and call it a different missile. And more to it India doesn't even have any other Cruise missile that is deployed. So unless he is talking about missiles such as Prahaar I don't think we have much to offer.

This is not true, on many occasions both, the Indian side and the Russian, have mentioned it that they will sell to any friendly countries (of both india and russia) who are interested after the requirements of India are fulfilled.

A news came in 2012 that hstdv will be tested in 2014. Perhaps the test will be conducted in coming months.
