Wednesday, January 09, 2013 - Washington—The Indian government plans constructing 292 dams throughout the Indian Himalayas, roughly a dam every 20 miles by 2050 that would reduce the flow of water by 8 percent in Indus and 20 percent in Brahamputra.

A report in the New York Times said that when completed, the 7,000 to 11,000 megawatt dams would double the country’s hydropower capacity and meet about 6 percent of the national energy needs projected for 2030. Scientists and citizens alike are crying foul, however, pointing out that the dams will probably displace millions and wreck ecosystems throughout the Himalayas.

For starters, impacts on species and ecosystems are likely to be significant. The dams are proposed in areas of the Himalayas that are rich in biodiversity. And their creation threatens to submerge over 130,000 acres of forest, which would probably push 22 plants and seven vertebrate groups into extinction by 2025, according to an estimate by Dr. Grumbine and Dr. Pandit that was published earlier this year in Conservation Biology.

Estimates of the number of people already displaced by dams in past decades range from 16.4 million to 40 million.

Indians can't keep their promise for next year and they are making predictions for 2050. *facepalm*
And they ask why they are not taken seriously by the international community.

Although your statement has some facts and i also agree with it....But again..you could have told in a non troll manner too...Of course i understand...you are bound by your habbit...

The day India finished 292 dams, all himalayas waters will be already contained into the bottles such TIBET SPRING, they wil have to harvest the wind instead to power these dams

Wow, I just love the reaction of Chinese members here. Are you guys really so jealous that Pakistani media is paranoid of us? Stop crying like kids and deal with it.

You don't blame the OP but posters:cry:

this could be crazy in a war with China, these dams will be a huge threat to India's populous north and even endanger Bangladesh....

It is indeed necessary to build dams to draw hydel power. The present capacity is about 40,000MW which is about 22% of total Electricity Generation in India. We have to increase it further to remove our dependency on fossil-fuel based power generation.
The figure of 292 seems highly unlikely, but no point in denying the fact that a lot of such projects are active in the Himalayan region.
The projected threat of slowing down of flow is also wrong.Once the reservoirs are full, the flow will just be the same.the amount of water that goes in is the amount of water that comes out.

sir, the threat is a THREAT of Drowning the whole north India, not this easy"slowing down of flow". are you on a military forum?

seems that the future always being holden in India's left hands
i suggest that they should consider building some road connecting to the sites before start to build their 292 dams in Himalayas

water will not be water by that time,it will be blue gold.

and many believe that next world war would take place because of water.
