WASHINGTON, July 19: The Indian lobby on Capitol Hill launched a campaign on Wednesday to prevent the United States administration from selling F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan.

“The $ 5.1 billion cutting edge arms package the administration is lining up will not only be useless in the war on terrorism or to hunt Osama bin Laden, but it will also come back to haunt both India and the US,” said a statement issued by the US-India Political Action Committee, the Indian caucus on the hill.

It said the Indian government had named “a Pakistani national with links to Al Qaeda as the primary suspect” in last week’s Mumbai blasts, while the US “Congress is inching closer to securing a weapons deal to Pakistan.”

On Thursday, the House International Relations Committee is holding a hearing on the deal.

The Indian caucus has organised a press conference to urge the Bush administration to stop the deal and has lined up several Republican and Democrat lawmakers to address it.

Earlier, US Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher defended the US offer to sell F-16s to Pakistan.

They've been doing this years. What do you recon guyz, the recent attacks by Israel on lebanone are gonna have some effects on this deal.

It is the same thing repeated all over. India executes its own and blames pakistan for the actions.

Then there are complaints of cross border incursions. India has installed barbed fence, sensors, lights etc and if the indian army still cannot control incursion, they ought to be ashamed at themsleves for doing such a poor and shoddy job and stop blaming pakistan for that.

They hold a share of 26 billion dollars anually in arms sales compared to 2 billion of China, it would be better if Pakistan would take the 5 billion dollar deal to China.

Pentagon defends sale of F-16s to Pakistan
WASHINGTON (updated on: July 21, 2006, 03:16 PST): The US government on Thursday defended its decision to sell up to 36 F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan, saying the weapons deal was a key component of the US global war on terror.

'This sale is a presidential priority and a key element of the administration's South Asia strategy unveiled in March 2005, aimed at broadening our strategic relationships with out key regional partners -- India, Afghanistan and Pakistan,' John Hillen, Assistant Secretary of State for political-military affairs told lawmakers.

He made his comments at a hearing of the House of Representatives International Relations Committee.

"The sale will send a very clear signal of our commitment to a long-term relationship with Pakistan ... and it will strengthen the hand of President (Pervez) Musharraf and his government in supporting us in the war on terror and in continuing to make other politically difficult, yet strategic choices," Hillen said.

I'm not too happy about $5Bn deal going to the US, either. It's an unreliable supplier, its got too much going on in this region. What'll happen when the next Democrat government comes in?

F-16s without capability to carry nukes is tauntamount to having wheat from US at heavy cost that too not suitable for the health.

thats rite..... plus usa sales f-15 and f-16 to india too so who nos wat they are up to.....

btw if pakistan wants a nuclear bomber they really should go for chinese jh-7 tactical fighter-bomber..... (jh-7 is more professional in bombing than j-10 and f-16)

I don't understand why we're all whing about the nuclear delivery system, its not important!
We need F-16C/D for airdefence, interception air superiority role, none of these requires nuclear warhead!

FGA option for PAF is still open, probably JF-20 will have the nuclear delivery capability

For the time being we can very well rely on our missiles, thats the most effective weapon we have to strike deep into India, something the F-16 cannot do!

So stop bashing the USA, inshallah the deal will be approved with all the systems we've asked for and we'll have a real killer here.

Btw, a typical attack formation will have JF-17 on the front, probably 8, complimented by 4-6 F-16 and 4 Mirage as I was told.
