New Delhi: The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to acquire six more C-130J Super Hercules special operations aircraft in addition to the six already ordered.

The IAF chief, Air Chief Marshal Norman Anil Kumar Browne, told India Strategic defence magazine (..:: India Strategic ::.. Home Page: The authoritative monthly on Defence and Strategic Affairs.), that the aircraft had performed well in the recent earthquake relief operations in north-eastern India and that the IAF would utilise the multi-role capability of the aircraft as required.

The C-130J can land and take off from unpaved, grassy fields the size of a football ground and can be a big support in both peace and war to drop or pick up equipment, soldiers and those hit by calamities.

The IAF had signed a deal for six C-130J aircraft for about USD 1.1 billion with the US military systems giant Lockheed Martin on January 31, 2008, and five of these aircraft have been delivered within 2011 as contacted, before their scheduled delivery time. Appropriate infrastructure has also been established and the required number of pilots trained either on or before time.

Browne said that the sixth and last of the aircraft was due in India in the first half of November, and the government had already approved the acquisition of another six aircraft. The first of the six aircraft was delivered in early 2011.

Discussions with the US Government and the company for the new batch were on, and he expected the order to be signed by January 2012, or in about three months from now. "We are very satisfied with the aircraft's performance," he observed.

It may be noted that the government asked the IAF to provide relief to the Sikkim earthquake victims immediately after the disaster, and IAF pressed the C-130Js into service for the first time. Within the first couple of days, IAF airlifted lifted 188.75 tonnes of equipment, 735 personnel, including 20.48 tons of food, 6 tons of medicines, 8.5 tonnes of fuel and about 51.81 tonnes of relief material. Thirty-six casualties were also evacuated.

All the C-130J Super Hercules aircraft are being acquired under a direct government-to-government agreement, under what is known as the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme of the US government. The acquisition is on a turnkey basis that includes on-time delivery, training, setting up of support infrastructure, spares and spare engines. Most of the work has been completed at IAF's Hindon airbase near the Indian capital.

The air chief said that "a full motion simulator is also being installed as part of the company's offsets obligations and would be ready for utilisation by 2012".

It was bound to happen as many predicted. We need atleast 30 C-130J till IRTA is available by the end of this decade.

Thats good news
Frankly , i would love to see a fleet of 30 C-130J Hercules replacing the 57 aging Hawker Siddeley HS 748

These are to be used primarily for SOFs missions (although we have seen with Sikkim response they can do a plethora of missions) so 12 is enough for IAF's SOAR. if you are talking about 30 C-130j for utility role they would be different to these and more basic without the specialised kit. But in this sense there is no real need as MRTA is to replace An-32 and augment AF's lift capability along with C-17s. But I must say with MRTA delay looking likely LM's timely delivery makes C-130 look very attractive. But I'd say for now IAF has no plans to induct C-130j for anything else than SOAR. Apparently though ICG and BSF are interested in this bird.

Now, 10 C-17 and 12 C-130J aircraft. :victory:

As a fan of this machine if will agree with you but the thing is we don't have enough money. 12 C130j and 10 C17 should be meant for SF and rest we can purchase cheaper European or Russian version or we can simply wait for MRTA as by 2015-16 they will be ready and right now our IL76 is also working and An32 are undergoing upgrades. The only problems seems to be are 50 odd Hawker Siddeley HS 748 which should be replaced.

IAF also issued RFI for 16 C-27J Spartan medium military transport aircraft. Are we purchasing them or not ? If we are i think we should go for a cheaper one C-295. Its way cheaper than C27j and has the same features.

Strange contrast! We are not using Avros in the role C-130s are being used in. And you should visit the cockpit of these Avros and some of the fuselages of theirs ... you shall be pleasantly surprised by the 'tech' installed in there!!!!

12 are only sufficient for now. Aim is to be able to airlift and maintain an airborne brigade strength for operations. Ultimate figures of how many ACs are required have been decided and procurement for the same is under way slowly.

@the emboldened bit-Are you hinting at an EW conversion or is it a possible FTB for any other CABS' tech toys???:azn::yahoo:

We have enough money to buy 30 C-130J over a period of 10 years till IRTA is ready. C-130J for SF but not the C-17. They are heavy transport aircraft, will be used for larger payload like tanks and other transports. And IRTA will take minimum 2018 to be fully operational. IAF never bought anything cheap when it comes to aircraft like C-17 or Phalcon or EFT/Rafale. All of them are costliest in their types.

The role of the Avros is in ELINT mainly now and have pretty good upgrades. Even the Dorniers have better avionics than IL-76s. Plus the servicibility of IL-76 is not great. Most likely the IL-76s are going to be replaced by 17 C-17s over the next few years. The operational moves to ensure this are already underway with the amalgamation of the IL segment into one operational squadron from two. Most likely this team will be the one forming the bulk undertaking training in US for C-17s.

Yeah service problem is there in Il76 but we can still go for european options or there are new Brazilian option also we can go for it. By 2015 they will be ready for production and we can purchase it while MRTA will go on.

Yes and this is where C-17/MRTA come in, possibly assisted by C-130s. But this is not the C-130s role in the IAF- it is a dedicated SOFs transport for low level, deep penetration, behind enemy lines insertion of SOFs (PARA SF, MARCOs, Gurad, SFF etc) whilst the C-17 amd MRTA will be great for the IA's airborne forces such as 50/51 Independent Parachute brigade and for regular PARA (5,6,7). Not to mention humanitarian relief.

we need all C-130 and c-17 with EW system, Raddar must be AESA, and anti missile laser which is in F 35 and perhaps F-22.

A good move..Lets see if MRTA comes in 2015...
