India test fires nuclear-capable Prithvi missile - India - The Times of India

Prithvi is India's first indigenously built ballistic missile. It is one of five missiles being developed under India's Integrated Missile Development Programme.

Prithvi is capable of carrying a payload of between 500 kg and one tonne, including nuclear weapons. Two versions of the missile have already been deployed with the army and air force.

Wednesday April 15, 2009, Balasore (Orissa)

India on Wednesday successfully test-fired a version of nuclear-capable 'Prithvi-II' ballistic missile with a range of 350 kms from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, about 15 km from here off the Orissa coast.

The indigenously developed surface-to-surface ballistic missile was test fired at around 1020 hours from a mobile launcher as part of a user trial by the army, defence sources said.

The entire trajectory of the trial was tracked down by a battery of sophisticated radars and electro-optic telemetry stations positioned in different locations for post-launch analysis, they said.

A naval ship had been anchored near the impact point in the Bay of Bengal and a long-range tracking radar (LRTR) as well as a multi-function tracking radar (MFTR) had been deployed to track the missile's trajectory.

The sources said the test firing of the short-range ballistic missile was a user trial by the army. The surface-to-surface missile has already been inducted into the army and is "handled by the army unit attached to the strategic force command special group", the sources said.

Amazing that there were no "alarms" raised over this like when North Korea did the same not long ago. One must wonder why does India need ballistic missiles? And needs to continue to "improve" on such things.

Anyway some details:

The Prithvi-2 is a short-range, road-mobile, liquid-propellant ballistic missile. Similar to the Prithvi-1 in many ways, the Prithvi-2 trades a smaller warhead for a longer range.

Alternate Name: P-2, SS-250
Class: SRBM
Basing: Road mobile
Length: 9.00 m
Diameter: 1.10 m
Launch Weight: 4000-4600 kg
Payload: Single warhead, 500-1000 kg
Warhead: nuclear, HE, submunitions
Propulsion: Single-stage liquid
Range: 350 km
Status: Operational

Congratulations India.

I believe we owe you a heart warming response. Sit tight, won't be long now. ;)

No alarms raised over this like when North Korea is quite simple and that is this missile is not threat to USA its just 250 or 300 Kms way to less compates to what NK was testing, its was some thing round 6000+ Kms. Even though not sure whether its was a missile of space rocket.

Simply because North Korea isn't known for sleeping with Uncle Sam when need arises.

India on the other hand .....

hmmm...'major non-NATO ally' would know how uncles sam's bed feels like...
how much did uncle sam's senate pay you this year for itall??

these kinds of test are a routine functional test and takes place for time to time the most important part would be to know if they tried the new seeker system on this missile too as the one which they tried on the recent brahmos. "The new seeker is unique and would help us to hit our targets, which are insignificant in terms of size, in a cluster of large buildings.
its a very unique technology that is been developed and there is great scope for this i guess i am waiting for more official report on this new system.

Why would Uncle Sam pay me? India's the one getting paid and rewarded all of a sudden for her 'Down' and 'Dirty' services in Afghanistan. :police:

Anyway, on a serious note, let's sit tight and see if Pakistan responds to this test. Who knows what we're hiding up our sleeve this time.

America has been our ally for decades. Including our main military supplier (Which is slowly being changed). So what's your point? We're not known for sleeping around with Russia when the need arises. How can you compare two entirely different scenario's?
