India Sended Back Sri Lankan Air Force Trainees

July 06, Chennai: India's Central government has caved into the pressure from Anti-Sri Lankan Tamil Nadu politicians and decided to send back the Sri Lankan Air Force personnel who were participating in a training program at the Tambaram airbase in Chennai.

"All Sri Lankan trainees are being sent off today from this station as per instruction of the ministry of defence," Indian Defence Ministry said in a brief statement Friday.

Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J. Jayalalithaa objected to the training given to Sri Lankan Air Force personnel in Chennai and asked the central government to cancel the training send them back to Sri Lanka immediately.

Nine Sri Lankan Air Force officers have arrived in the Tambaram Air Force station in Chennai for a nine month-long training, as part of a bilateral agreement between the two countries.

"At a time when there are demands for sanction against those charged of war crimes, reports about Sri Lankan Air Force personnel receiving training in India was against interests of Tamil people," the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has said in a statement in Chennai.

Training Sri Lankan airmen came under severe attack from all Tamil Nadu political parties which are sympathetic to the Tamil cause in Sri Lanka.

Union shipping minister G K Vasan today expressed his support to the Chief Minister's call and said training of Sri Lankan troops at the Tambaram air base is a matter of concern.

"It is a matter of concern, considering the cruelties faced by Tamils in Lanka," he has said adding that the decision to train Sri Lankan Air Force personnel was "unacceptable and regrettable".

DMK president M Karunanidhi and MDMK founder Vaiko also joined to support the Chief Minister's call to send the Sri Lankan trainees back.

India bowing to the pressure from the Tamil Nadu political parties voted against Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Right Council sessions in March to adopt a resolution sponsored by the United States. India was the only Asian member state of the UNHRC to support the resolution against Sri Lanka.

It's a pity that in our country national interests are held ransom to small political gains. I am not justifying what the Sri Lankans did to our fishermen or what they did to there own nationals, but here we are vacating space which can be grabbed by China or Pakistan, which are eagerly waiting for this to happen. Good ties with Sri Lanka is in our larger national interest, it is important that New Delhi forms our foreign Policy & it should be not formed in Chennai, Lucknow or even Kolkata.

Sri Lanka - We did not supported Sri Lankan Govt. against LTTE & China selled all the weapons to SL forces.

Myanmar - We first did not support the military Junta, just to find Myanmar going towards the Chinese.

Iran - We are busy making our ties with Iran weaker (under US pressure ofcourse) & China is busy doing just the opposite.

Nepal - letting moists come to power & now China finding considerable leverage over Nepal.

While on the other hand TN gov always keeps on playing dirty politics with central government .. TN fishermen enter Srilankan waters and they get arrested

Most Indians want good relations with Sri Lanka while keeping the sentiments on Indian Tamils in consideration. This isn't a democratic decision by any means .
