Even as U.S. and Indian diplomats squabble over Iran, cooperation between their counterparts in the military continues apace.

The Indian and U.S. navies began their 16th annual “Malabar” exercise last Saturday in Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu that borders on the Bay of Bengal. The 10-day joint exercise, which will conclude on April 16, consists of both ashore and at-sea training.

The harbor phase took place April 7 to 9 in Chennai, and was supposed to feature seminars on everything from air defense and integrated anti-submarine warfare operations, to carrier aviation operations and counter-piracy operations. The U.S. 7th Fleet released a statement saying that Malabar’s at-sea phase will include, “liaison officer exchanges and embarks, communications exercises, surface action group operations, helicopter cross-deck evolutions and gunnery exercises.”

Indo-U.S. naval cooperation has become increasingly important amid China’s growing naval capabilities. Washington’s ability to rely on local naval forces like India will be especially vital now that budget cuts have forced the U.S. Navy to scale back estimates on the future size of its fleet.

From 2006 to late 2011, naval officers had regularly said a 315-ship fleet was the minimum needed to meet future contingencies. Last month, however, the U.S. Navy released the annual update of its 30-year shipbuilding plan, which forecast the current 285-ship fleet continuing to shrink before bottoming out at 276 warships in 2015. Although the report said the naval fleet would begin to increase after that, it projected a peak of 307 ships in the late 2030’s.

But despite recent unsettling reports, India’s Navy remains an attractive partner for Washington. Both already operate carrier-centric blue water fleets. Furthermore, in February India’s Navy and Air Force conducted a network-centric joint exercise that complements the U.S. AirSea Battle concept. Last week, India inaugurated two Russian-built nuclear submarines and plans to purchase to 75 Naval Multirole Helicopters (NMRH) from Lockheed Martin to strengthen its anti-submarine capabilities.

The Navies are also sending large fleets to this year’s Malabar exercise. The U.S. Navy is represented by the Carrier Strike Group-1, part of Task Force 70, which is the 7th Fleet’s battle force. Among the U.S. ships and vessels taking part in the exercise are the USS Carl Vinson, a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier; Carrier Air Wing 17; the USS Bunker Hill, a Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser; and the USS Halsey, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer.

India naval forces participating in the exercise include Guided Missile Frigate INS Satpura, Guided Missile Destroyers INS Ranvijay, and INS Ranvir, Missile Corvette INS Kulish, and Fleet Tanker INS Shakti, according to a report in The Hindu.

lol 300+ ships, that's not there to contain China, as China is still stuck in SCS at the moment, and could send pretty much nothing credible to the Indian ocean at the moment.

So Indian members guess what that fleet is there for.

Sir, why post it in china and the fareast section?

The scale of cooperation that the United States expects to have with the Indian Navy will not be contained in the Indian Ocean Region, but in the Western Pacific as well.

It is invertible that the Indian Navy expands its patrol beyond the Indian Ocean. A friendly Indian Navy will ensure the safety of maritime trade not only in the Indian Ocean but also into the Western Pacific. The 5th and 7th Fleet already cooperate with our friends in Indian Naval Battle Groups in curbing piracy and enforcing international law through interdiction.

The United States Navy expects cooperation with the Indian Navy in maintaining cooperation of all member states in the region. In regards to China, well, this is a containment policy made manifest.

As I feared high pollution or something else is severely hampering brain activity of the chinese.

So let me get this straight, Indian navy at this point is enough to handle anything China throw at it as Chinese force projection is some ways off. Maybe in the year 2025 China can mount a credible strike in Indian ocean, but at this point it is not.

Other than China who else has even 5 ships to sent to the indian ocean?

Your 300 ship fleet is there to lay claim to Indian ocean, you are just clever to call it helping Indians defend against China, when the Chinese threat is nowhere near.

unless you are really kind and just want to spend your money to protect the Indian interests.

It really is, cough, cough

Got it,

also the Japanese navy and Austrailians were keen to join up last year on this annual exercise...what happened about that?

The cooperation between the United States and Indian Navies have grown ever deeper since the first Malabar Exercise in 2002. These annual exercise have offered the opportunity for the U.S. and Indian naval services to conduct communications exercises, surface action group (SAG) operations, helicopter cross-deck evolutions, and gunnery exercises. Malabar has been held every year now for the past 11 years ; representing continuity.

The United States Naval presence in the Indian Ocean Region is variably light, which is beneficial for us because we can spread out naval forces to other regions. The reliability of our friends, the Indian Navy, ensures that American interest are secured.

Your delusional machinations of a strike at the Indian Navy is testament of unrestrained infantile narcissism. Chinese naval power has already been contained. The UN international arbitration in regards to the SCS issue is testament of the containment of Chinese waters and thus, Chinese naval sphere of control.

C'mon, grow up, kid.

Exercise Malabar , as you said, includes the naval units of other countries such as Japan and Australia. However, the potency and reliability of those said navies are contained to their sphere of interest. Japan, by constitutional declaration, is limited. Australia's naval assets are nil and firepower not as potent as to that of our strategic naval ally, the Indian Navy. She alone has the capability to operate a carrier battle group in the region, aside from the United States.

A lot of events in the future will need interoperability between the USN and IN and these exercises provide the perfect platform to perfect that.

Why is anyone surprised, India has ALWAYS been a vassal state of the west. When the white man says 'jump', it's vassal states say 'how high sir'. This is exactly why we always look down on Indians as low class people because India is a defeated nation in our eyes controlled by the west as a vassal state. Next step will be military bases built in India by the Yankee military. It's only natural for vassal states.

But Pakistan is somehow your best friend?? LOL...seems the respect theory is selective in its honor...

Besides...since when did the Chinese get on such a high horse of "looking down" on others...Its laughable to even care about what the Chinese think....simply speaking the only chinese that matter are the CPC rulers...every other chinese person should know that even their own govt doesnt value their opinion...let alone the rest of the world...lol!

Ever since 1962, we have always looked down on India. As I said, you are a defeated nation in our eyes. That's why we never take India seriously despite India being totally obsessed with us constantly comparing yourself to us.
We don't respect India as a country now and never have.
