European space consortium Ariane space would launch India’s INSAT-3D, an exclusive meteorological satellite, from its spaceport of Kourou in French Guiana on July 26.

According to Indian space agency ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation), INSAT-3D is configured with advanced meteorological payloads – a six Channel Imager, 19 Channel Sounder along with data relay transponder and satellite aided search & rescue payloads.

“The spacecraft platform is adopted from the standard I-2K bus with a power handling capability of around 1100 W with a lift off mass of 2090 kg”, an ISRO official told PTI front its headquarters Bangalore in south Indian state Karnataka.

India has also contracted Arianespace to launch (expected in August) GSAT-7, a multi-band satellite carrying payloads in UHF, S-band, C-band and Ku-band. The satellite employs the standard 2000 kg class bus (I-2K) platform with a power handling capability of around 3000 W and lift-off mass of 2550 Kg.

ISRO sources said preparations are on at the second launch pad at the spaceport of Sriharikota for the launch of GSLV-D5 (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Development flight 5) in August.

GSLV-D5 aerodynamic characterisation has been revisited following the back-to-back failure of GSLV flights — one with indigenous cryogenic engine and another with Russian-made in 2010.

Force measurements, steady and unsteady pressure measurements and aero elastic tests have already been conducted using wind tunnel models at National Aerospace Laboratory, Bangalore and Glavkosmos, Russia.

Computational fluid dynamics simulations have been carried out in-house for incremental effects on protrusion, overall aerodynamic load distribution and distribution on protrusions, according to ISRO.

GSLV-D5 would carry GSAT14 satellite with six Extended C band and six Ku band transponders, envisaged to enhance communication transponder capacity.

The satellite employs the standard 2000 Kg class bus (I2K) with a power handling capability of around 2.5 KW and a lift-off mass of 1980 kg, the space agency added.

. . .
wait till we get GSLV 3 worked ..then we will be able to

Wait Guys. You ALL Got it wrong.

Note the Mass of Satellites. Its a 2000KG Class which can be launched by GSLV MK II, infact as the article suggessts one of the GSATs will be Launched frm India in Aug.

The reason why INSAT 3D is being launched by Ariane is NOT a matter of launch Capability, as we have launched several 2 Ton Class Sats using GSLV and one one occasion using PSLV as well.

The Indian capability lacks in 4 Ton Class, which means our Heavy INSAT 4 class sats can ONLY be launched by GSLV MK III.

Why isn't India launching its own sat?

Indias only operational launch vehicle PSLV can launch max 1500 Kgs sats to GTO, max 1900 kgs sats to SSO and 3500 kgs to LEO (could launch an OV with single human into 300-400 km orbit). INSAT series sats weigh more than 2000kg and are put in GTO, so PSLV cannot launch them.

The other launcher, GSLV mk2 has the required capability (2500-3000Kgs to GTO), but has a patchy launch success record and is also currently scheduled for a development flight in august with a comparatively low cost sat.
