India rolls out its First CNG based Rail Locomotive - Indian Railways Going Green!

Not really - First of all it's entirely upon the will of the government to decide at what rate that wicked Ambani would sell it to them - they can even terminate that contract and give it to any other company they want - The GoI commands an absoulte effective control over the KG Basin Reserves - It's a National Public Property!

lets see there are legal binding contracts with international arbitration involved

And yes ONGC and Oil India Ltd. (OIL) are still the leading companies with respect to production volume - ONGC supplies around 62% of India's total domestic Natural Gas supply!
[/quote]

that is simply because production from Kgd6 is being curtailed in expectation of higher prices

once the production is started full fledged only KGd6 will account for more than 25% of indians total output

The Gas Authority of India Ltd.|GAIL] holds an effective control on natural gas transmission and allocation activities. Nothing much to worry about - it's upon Modi to decide!

GAIL is not the regulator it is only a player in the space / industry there is a seperate regulator - PNGRB or something like that

also many cos including reliance has permission to setup nationwide gas pipelines and even Gujarat state has authority to do so in Gujarat state and it has already done so

I hope the safety issues are taken care of. unlike Diesel or Gasoline, CNG is far more inflammable, and at those pressures, its potential explosion.

Indian quality control measure are very stringent when it come to manufacturing new high end equipment, be it missiles, space vehicles, aircraft or ships.

Suresh Prabhu to launch first CNG train from Rewari today

New Delhi: In what could be considered as a milestone in adoption of green fuel in Indian Railways, the first CNG train will be launched on Tuesday on Rewari-Rohtak section of Northern zone.

Based on the dual fuel system - diesel and CNG - the train will be flagged off by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu from Rewari, a senior Railway Ministry official.

Introduction of CNG trains will reduce greenhouse gas emission by the Railways and also the consumption of diesel.

Prabhu has given emphasis on the use of alternative fuel in train operation including use of solar and wind power to reduce dependence on conventional energy.

Railways have modified the 1,400 HP engine to run on dual fuel - diesel and CNG - through fumigation technology.

The Rewari passenger train will consume over 20 percent of the CNG, covering 81 km long distance in about two hours. Railways had earlier conducted a trial run in the section.

According to the official, there are plans to run more such CNG trains in due course to reduce diesel consumption.

The train comprising of two power cars and six car coaches has been manufactured by Integral Coach Factory at Chennai with the CNG conversion kit being supplied by Cummins.

Development of a CNG conversion technology which will permit utilisation of over 60 percent CNG is also underway, he said, adding "switch over to LNG technology is also being planned as that will enable higher fuel carrying capacity."

Besides Rewari-Rohtak, Prabhu will also launch another passenger service between Rewari and Bikaner as announced in the Rail Budget 2014-15.

The Railways desperately needs an in-house Swach Bharat Abhiyaan! :p: The Engine compartments are so untidy!
We need to work a little more harder on the looks department

Gentlemen, the rake u see is actually a modified DMU retrofitted with CNG kits and its perhaps some kind of a prototype design to do functional tests by putting one rake in commercial service.
The new generation DEMUs are quite sophisticated and tastefully designed.

Patiala-based railway unit to make LNG locos

PATIALA: Innovation in railway engines could soon move to the next level with Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)-driven locomotives set to turn into a reality. Patiala-based railway engine manufacturing unit has started pre-production exercise to manufacture LNG locomotives, which would be the first of its kind in the country.

The dream to manufacture country's first LNG driven engine has moved beyond embryonic stage as Diesel Loco Modernization Works (DMW), a unit of Railways, has floated tenders to purchase the equipment required to manufacture the engine.

"It has been decided that the country's first LNG driven railway locomotive will be manufactured in this unit. We have already moved beyond the planning stage. We have invited tenders from international companies to provide us some equipment, which we will use while manufacturing the locomotive", HK Kala, chief administrative officer, DMW, told TOI.

"If all goes according to plan, we will be able to manufacture first such engine in next 1-2 years that would be subsequently run on trial. Rationale to manufacture such a locomotive is to conserve fuel cost, increase efficiency and make locomotives more eco-friendly", added Kale.

Pulling equal load with same speed, the LNG-based locomotive will cut per unit running cost by 40% compared to the running cost of a diesel engine, said a senior DMW engineer, who is supervising the project.

"The first engine would be of 3300HP capacity, which would be sufficient to pull a long distance passenger train," he added.

He said initial cost of the locomotive would be around Rs 20 crore, which is nearly double than a diesel locomotive manufactured in DMW. It costs Indian Railways around Rs 11 crore to manufacture a new locomotive with latest techniques at its Patiala unit.

A separate LNG chamber, nearly similar to the size of engine itself, would be attached behind the engine. This chamber would be of around 11,000 litre capacity which would be sufficient to run a train up to a distance of around 1500km.

The engine is same as that of diesel engine. The only difference is the type of fuel injectors. "For ignition, LNG-driven engine will require diesel as a fuel. However, once started, the engine would run on LNG. So we require injectors that can inject both diesel and LNG. This is the major item we have sought to purchase through tenders," said an engineer.

Good move. I hope the solar panels become cheaper and economically viable to put on every rooftop in buildings also.
