India and Pakistan may have found a new road to peace in the unlikeliest of places — war-battered Yemen. The two countries have cooperated actively in the conflict zone to extricate their citizens but Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif followed it up Tuesday with a special gesture when his government announced his decision to send back 11 Indians evacuated by a Pakistan ship to India by a special plane.
India too has evacuated 17 Pakistan nationals from different places in Yemen and brought them to Djibouti. India, in fact, has rescued 232 foreign nationals from as many as 26 countries, including the US, UK, Germany and France, from Yemen. The 11 Indians currently in Karachi were based in Mukalla and needed help immediately last week when the town was overrun by al-Qaida men freed from a jail break. Along with the Pakistanis in Mukalla, the Indians were brought to the nearby Ash Shihr port from where they were evacuated by Pakistan naval ship Aslat.
"India accepts Pakistan's offer to fly back from Karachi by special plane 11 Indians evacuated by Pakistani naval ship from Yemen,'' tweeted foreign ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin.
India further flew out 600 from Sanaa on Tuesday by three Air India flights taking the total number of those evacuated to over 3900. Officials said that 73 more were extricated from Hodeidah by INS Tarkash late evening. Air India will fly for the last time into Sanaa on Wednesday to evacuate the few remaining Indians in Yemen capital who may want to leave. According to MEA, there were 5000 Indian nationals in Yemen and close to 4000 of these have been evacuated. The remaining 1000 are married to Yemeni nationals and don't want to leave the country even now.
Apart from Indians and Pakistanis, India has also evacuated 26 US nationals, 25 from UK, 24 from Uganda, 22 from Sweden and 20 from Russia. There are 23 people from Syria too. The situation in Yemen has also aided India's neighbourhood outreach with many south Asians in the list of those evacuated by Indian authorities apart from Pakistanis. These include 21 from Sri Lankan, 16 from Nepal, 15 from Myanmar, 13 from Maldives and 1 from Bangladesh.
Pakistan still needed to extricate about 1200 people from Yemen when the situation deteriorated on March 27 following the Saudi Arabia led air strikes on Sanaa and other cities in Yemen. It has evacuated most of them through sea, air and also land route. The Chinese navy too evacuated 186 Pakistanis from Aden and brought them to Djibouti.
