Leak stalls GSLV launch

The Hindu : News : Leak stalls GSLV launch

The launch of Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-F06) with the satellite GSAT-5P on board, slated to take place from Sriharikota at 4.01 p.m. on Monday (December 20), has been postponed. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) took this decision after its rocket technologists detected on Saturday evening the leak of helium gas from one of the valves in the Russian upper cryogenic stage of the vehicle. The leak rate was on the higher side. The leak was noticed during the pre-countdown check of the vehicle.

The Launch Authorisation Board, which met at the spaceport at Sriharikota on Sunday morning, therefore, decided not to give the go-ahead to the 29-hour countdown which was to begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

A high-ranking ISRO rocket engineer said: “We have to find out the real cause for the leak of helium from one of the valves in the upper cryogenic stage. The leak rate was slightly on the higher side. We have to do some testing to make sure that the leak rate is acceptable. We found out the problem during the pre-countdown checks before the cryogenic propellants – liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen – were pumped into the cryogenic stage.” He argued that the leak was a common problem. He was confident the problem would be resolved and that the GSLV-F06 would lift off in two to three days’ time.

The GSLV-F06 has three stages. The core first stage uses solid propellants. Four booster motors, powered by liquid propellants, are strapped to the core first stage. The second stage uses liquid propellants. The third upper cryogenic stage is from Russia.

The GSAT-5P is a satellite with 36 transponders which can be used for beaming television and radio programmes and telephonic conversations, for conducting telemedicine and tele-education programmes and organising banking services.

Indian, Russian scientists discuss rocket launch delay

Indian and Russian space scientists are discussing the remedial measures that need to be taken after a leak was detected in the cryogenic engine of a rocket that was to place an advanced communications satellite into orbit on Monday. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Sunday decided
to postpone the rocket's launch after it detected the leak in one of the valves of the Russian-made cryogenic engine during the pre-countdown mandatory tests even as the 51-metre tall rocket was on the launch pad.

The rocket, called the geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV) was to carry GSAT-5P, an advanced communications satellite meant to retire an earlier one sent up in 1999 and ensure continuity of telecom, TV and weather services.

S Satish, a director at ISRO, said: "There is a small team of Russian experts at the rocket port whenever a rocket is flown with their cryogenic engine."

He said the Russians had supplied seven cryogenic engines, of which five were used in the earlier GSLV rockets.

The 29-hour countdown, planned to commence at 11.01 a.m. Sunday, was not authorised by the Launch Authorisation Board. The board met Sunday forenoon at the Sriharikota rocket launch centre to review the results of pre-countdown checks and decided against proceeding with the mission.

According to ISRO officials, the GSLV rocket has three stages. The first stage is fired by solid fuel and hugged by four strap-on motors fired by liquid fuel. The strap-on motors give additional thrust during the lift off and the initial phase of the rocket's flight.

The second stage/engine is fired by liquid fuel and the third and complex stage is the cryogenic engine powered by liquid hydrogen as fuel and liquid oxygen as oxidizer.

The solid fuel is cast ready while the liquid fuel is filled hours before the rocket's blast-off.

Sources close to ISRO told IANS that there are standard leak rates for valves. Only when this exceeds the minimum level are alarm bells sounded.

ISRO officials said that since the cryogenic engine is supplied by Russia, their expertise and consent will be obtained on how to plug the leak.

If at all the valve has to be replaced, then it has to be supplied by the Russians, the sources said.

"The components of Indian cryogenic engine are of varied specifications and will not fit the Russian made one. The Russians had supplied the seven cryogenic engines long ago," the source told IANS.

According to officials, dismantling of the cryogenic engine with the faulty valve and fitting the rocket with another one will take time.

"The new engine's systems have to be checked and it will take over a month to make it flight ready," a source said.

According to ISRO officials, a delay in the GSAT-5P launch will not affect any of its customers as the earlier satellite INSAT-2E is still operational.

abhi launch kar rahe hain?

One hour and 45 minutes to go. After launch it will take 19 minutes and 20 seconds to put the satellite into the intended orbit.

I have exam tomorrow but could not resist! :)

.
Please discuss the prominent use of this satellite, as name suggests it is communication satellite but what kind of communication satellite?

Haaa.... Screw the exam.. follow the launch..

Go..... ISRO Gooooooooooooooo

It will be placed into earths orbit right? How far is the intended orbit and what is the speed of the rocket?

Edit- It's ok sir I guess nothing wrong in carrying one of two backlogs :P

.
do u know any website where u can view the launch. they dont show indian news channels here, geo might cover it but thats after the launch. i wanna see it as it happens

Aisa dost kahan har kisi k paas hota hain! :hitwall:

It will be placed in Geo transfer orbit (GTO) 170x35975 km away from earth by the GSLV. Than it will be maneuvered to 36000 km geostationary orbit by firing liquid apogee (LAM) on board the satellite.

Please discuss the prominent use of this satellite, as name suggests it is communication satellite but what kind of communication satellite?

With total 36 transponders (24 C-band and 12 extended C-band) GSAT-5P is an advanced communication satellite with an automatic receiver and transmitter of communication or broadcast signals. The GSAT-5P will be used for broadcasting television programmes, beaming telephone conversations, networking banking transactions etc.

Live on DD National. They have just shown the entire launch vehicle assembly and satellite testing sequences. Its was cool. :smokin:

. . .
The lift off was smooth and the stages were normal but I have seen something happened in the payload faring/cryogenic engine!!

Haa.... failed..

On a lighter note: Never test on a christmas day..
