India ready to conduct more nuke tests: DRDO chief

On a day DRDO chief S Christopher said the country was ready for carrying out more nuclear tests, if required, the government denied service extension to him and has given the charge to defence secretary Sanjay Mitra for the time being to look after the country's defence research organisation.

Christopher had applied for another extension of one year to the government after he got it once last year. "The competent authority has approved assignment of additional charge of the post of secretary, department of DRDO and chairman, DRDO to Mitra for a period of three months with effect from tomorrow," an order issued by the personnel ministry said.

He was in May 2015 appointed as DG of the DRDO for a two-year term after the government cut short previous DRDO chief Avinash Chander's tenure as DRDO chief as the PMO wanted to bring in new people with new ideas to run the organisation. Chander was appointed as the DRDO chief during UPA times.

In an interview, Christopher on Monday said the country has advanced immensely in terms of nuclear missiles capability from the 1998 nuclear tests conducted in Pokharan by then Vajpayee government.

At the time of his appointment, Christopher was then working as distinguished scientist and programme director (airborne early warning and control system) and director, Centre for Air-Borne Systems in the DRDO.

Established in 1980, the DRDO advises the government on scientific aspects of military equipment and logistics and the formulation of research, design and development plans for the equipment required by the three services - the Army, Navy and the Air Force.

Hydrogen bombs or large weapons are already absolute, no use in India-Pakistan war since we are very close to each other and will face fallout of our own weapons, instead we are producing small clean PU based warheads, spiked with Tritium which 10x multiply the existing yield and half life is also very low.

Whatever we do must follow them, let them take the heat so we can say we are responding to indian tests etc

Countries like the U.S are just waiting for us to do something like this so that they can slap a bunch of sanctions against us, that becomes much harder if we simply respond to indian tests


Keep developing our nuclear and missile assets in the meantime

Exactly but if we test in response to a indian test/instigation then we will only be limited to the sanctions imposed upon india itself
