India razes slums, leaves poor homeless - CNN.com

NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- Hanso Devi moved to New Delhi from Rajasthan with just one hope -- to make a better life for herself and her family.

She, her husband, five children and other relatives erected a hut to live in --- a home that provided shelter and a base for her husband's streetside blacksmith business.

The problem is that the land they built on belongs to the government. And the government has decided to take it back.

In a matter of minutes bulldozers level the place, leaving Devi and her family perched on a bed atop a sea of rubble. They have nowhere to go.

"They did it so fast that there was no time to take out anything. And the bulldozer broke everything on the way," Devi said.

"It's like we were picked up and thrown away," she said.

Bulldozers razed the makeshift home and hundreds of others earlier this month as the Indian government moves to improve New Delhi for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Officials say the land is for a road and the demolitions are simply part of a master plan to clean up the city and move slum-dwellers to proper housing.

But, the government says, there will be no relocation for families like Hanso Devi's because they do not meet relocation requirements.

The government says they are squatting too close to the road, and are located in a major development zone.

"You see they have encroached on the specific project lengths -- there will be no notice, no relocation projects for them," said New Delhi Mayor Arti Mehra, who says she and the city are worried about those who have been left homeless.

About 3 million people live in New Delhi's slums, the government estimates. Mehra says New Delhi is slated to build 100,000 new apartments, though only 6,800 are under construction.

Critics say demolishing housing that has been here for years and relocating some residents but not others will hurt many who live on the margins of society.

"They'll be pushed to the brink," said A.K. Roy of the Hazards Centre Sanchal Foundation, a non-governmental organization.

"Eventually I think what the planners are doing, they are not realizing they'll be building up a pool of violence."

The people who live in New Delhi's slums are some of the city's maids, drivers, street vendors and day laborers. Roy argues the city could not survive without the services that the slum dwellers provide.

The slums may not have looked like much to outsiders, but to families who had lived there for years, they were everything. Their businesses, homes and temples were there. Now they are lost.

Some huts are still standing, for now. Among them is the home of Sheila Naurang Lal, built more than 20 years ago by the family who still lives there.

But that is little comfort for Lal as she sees what has happened to the homes a few yards from her house.

"I came to the road yesterday after being scared seeing the bulldozer," Lal says. "You must have seen the front part has been broken."

It has been two days since the latest slum eradication, but families are still eking out a living amid the ruins. A mother cooks for her children, a 90-year-old woman with a walker sits on her bed and someone's pet goat is tied up at a shrine, waiting for its owner.

Hanso Devi looks around as night falls. She will spend another night in the open with nothing to keep her warm but a small fire.

"We are going to sleep right here. There is no place other than this."

What else can we expect from India ?

Only caring about the Rich , telling the world it is a very developed country.

But from deep down inside it is *******.

India has the capabilities to finish poverty, but they only care about the rich people and focus on some cities only, building mega projects there.

With the same amount of money 1 rich person can be satisfied or a thousand poor ones.

India's choice is clear.

no offense, indian ,this report reminds me of an anti-china criticism from an indian couple of days ago,our government did "kicked" us out of our home for some developing plans, but we would get a new house before being "kicked out",Personally,i love this "kick out "plan.an old one for a new one,who wouldn't say yes... but can you explain to me how could this inhumanity thing happened in india? you don't have any human rights?or just the rich indian have the human rights?

Countries can go to any extent to improve their image worldwide, India has forgot its limits.

They will realize what they have done, once these neglected people turn against their own country.

you don't know/refuse to know the whole story here.

1. These people were clearly encroaching on govt land that was being developed. No one has the "human right" to do so. I refuse to imagine the horrors a Chinese peasant would go through if he suddenly put up a tent in an Olympic stadium in Beijing. At least the woman in India is alive and has a tongue to tell her story.

2. The local govts in India have tried various slum redevelopment projects in the past with varying degrees of success. There have been reported cases where the slum dwellers would simply accept a spanking new appt from the govt and then rent it out, all the while living in the same shithole and whining.

3. Corruption and inefficiency - the less the said, the better. Politicians in govt use their power to buy up valuable land, etc.

4. In places like Mumbai, archaic tenancy laws have artificially pushed land prices up so high that slum areas in the city are pricier than the richest parts of Canada. So a lot of people refuse to move out of these slums. Reform of the tenancy laws faces huge opposition from the same people.

4. Ultimately, the problem remains there are way too many people in India - there isn't enough India for all Indians if they want a decent life.

plz elaborate on the bold part....
if you meant that these ppl will turn against the govt, then they already do it everyday. otherwise I dont understand wat you meant.

It was a govt. land dude, they might be planning to build a road or a flyover there or something, they wer'ent kicked out of their own homes. Even the Prime Minister of India cannot kick you out if you have valid papers of the house you own.

 , we dont need to go out on the streets protest and get killed out be herd out loud, we have the power of the vote. Our govt.s are not elected in America.

Mate dont forget the examples of Singur, Nandigram etc. In these places the voice of ordinary poor people won not of the rich industrialist.

Your post strongly smells of malice my friend. Well anyways the point i intend to make here is that India has one of the best records in Poverty Reduction worldwide.

Indian media is at least free to report anything. Can you say the same of chinese media? Moreover this case is of a family who was encroching the footpath. In China we have seen old homes being razed and people crying and abusing authorities. There are lots of groups in India who will take up the cases of such people and there will be stories on TV. Anyway...China is always great...cheer up my friend.

At the end it is result of Indian false claims of shining India. No wonder poverty galore.

dude India is doing pretty well economically even in testing times, unlike Pakistan which has to rely on IMF bailouts to keep itself afloat. Having said that yes poverty is still a reality in India but then again India has one of the best records worldwide in poverty reduction.

Yes, via bulldozer.

Yes well, Indian governments can actually afford bulldozers. Can't say the same about Pakistan :D

What would the Pakistani government do if there were squatters on its land that it bought for a development project?
