India ranks below China, Pak in global hunger index
PTI, Oct 11, 2010

NEW DELHI: India has been ranked 67, way below neighbouring countries like China and Pakistan, in a new global hunger index by the International Food Policy Research Institute.

The index, released on Monday, rated 84 countries on the basis of three leading indicators -- prevalence of child malnutrition, rate of child mortality, and the proportion of people who are calorie deficient.

China is rated much ahead of India at the ninth place, while Pakistan is at the 52nd place on the 2010 Global Hunger Index, released by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in association with a German group Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe.

In India, the high Index scores are driven by high levels of child underweight resulting from the low nutritional and social status of women in the country, the report pointed out, adding that India alone accounts for a large share of the world's undernourished children, the IFPRI report said.

India is home to 42% of the world's underweight children, while Pakistan has just 5%, it added.

Among other neighbouring countries, Sri Lanka was at the 39th position and Nepal ranked 56 by index. Bangladesh listed at the 68th position.

"The economic performance and hunger levels are inversely correlated. In South and Southeast Asia, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Timor-Leste are among countries with hunger levels considerably higher than their gross national income (GNI) per capita," the IFPRI report said.

"Undernutrition in the first two years of life threatens a child's life and can jeopardise physical, motor and cognitive development. It is therefore of particular importance that we take concerted action to combat hunger, especially among young children," the report stressed.

It further said that the global food security is under stress. Although the world's leaders, through the first Millennium Development Goal, adopted a goal of halving the proportion of hungry people between 1990 and 2015, "we are nowhere near meeting that target."

"The 2010 world Global Hunger Index (GHI) shows some improvement over the 1990 world GHI, falling from 19.8 points to 15.1 or by almost one-quarter. The index for hunger in the world, however, remains serious," it noted.

In recent years, however, the number of hungry people has actually been increasing. In 2009, on the heels of a global food price crisis and in the midst of worldwide recession, the number of undernourished peopled surpassed one billion, although recent estimates by the UN body Food and Agriculture Organisation suggest that the number will have dropped to 925 million in 2010, it added.

They have given a headline that could make it less embarrassing otherwise it is "India among top of Hunger ranking"

Does a countries relative ranking of hunger change the number of desperately poor people in its own borders? Do relative ranking feed malnourished children? why is there this compulsive need to compare India to others. This trait and way of thinking if manifest in a person would be considered major insecurity issues.

Hmm, what happened? India is home to 42% of the world's underweight children? :undecided:
Is this some kind of "fake data" or conspiracy just to make "Shinning India" look bad.

So, underweight mean not getting enough food probably lead to stunt growth eh? i thought Indians were always talking big of how "rich" India is, and now i guess "Starving India" instead......:hang2:

.
Oh, i was told by some Indians, Chinese will never understand "freedom, democracy" etc,
now can someone enlighten me how does the wonderful "biggest democracy" lead to "biggest starvation population" on the planet?:pop:
Wow! too good to be true: 9 place for communist China and 67 for democracy India:smitten:

Uggh ToI why always the China comparison.

Whats wrong in comparing it with China. India is trying to replicate China's success and trying to learn from them. This article just shows that there is a lot of work to be done.

Such article keeps the government on their feet and alerts them of the ground realities.

Comparison with Pakistan to show that even though Pakistan has a slower economic growth rate has still managed to do better than Pakistan.

I respectfully disagree... As a late starter in initiating economic reforms and also being a late starter in being considered a world power, India will always compare itself with the much larger neighbor... who has been there and done that... It should not considered as having major insecurity issues...

If comparisons were pointing to insecurity issues, why leading sports persons enjoy and compare their personal performances, with that of their competitors... it is to analyze where they stand when compared to others and what should be done to improve thier standing further...

.
lets face it... who is the biggest and the best in this neighborhood... China is... And there should be no harm in comparing oneself with the best...

As a matter of fact, India compares everything of her own with China.
Why do Indians always like to compare with China and not other countries ??? And why are Indians always amazed with China's infrastructure, their super highways and new constructions ?

We are accepting in this issue China and Pakistan are performing better and we need to improve and will try to come as close to china as possible.

Thanks to China as source of Inspiration for us.

its because of states like bihar, rajashthan and UP whch are full of beggers. we punjabis are better than both pakistan and china. anyways being an indian its big shame we are doing worst than even pakistan and china both being poor nations

There are always leading and lagging states in every country. Please stay away from this stupid childish stereotyping of "full of beggers (sic)". Bihar has as much wealth as other states, but it rests with the corrupt politicians and landlords. Just FYI, Bihar has been making some impressive progress under Nitish Kumar. So just relax and spare everyone the juvenile commentary.

You did the wrong comparasion and on wrong forum. This is the International forum where you are representing your country not your state.

Well it is a success story and something we can learn from. I won't say we need to replicate China's methods, but getting inspired from someone's success is better than burning yourself with jealousy. Which brings me to an interesting question - is there anything that Pakistanis admire about India, or is it all like the blind hatred displayed on this forum?
