India puts brakes on Black Shark torpedo deal
India's Ministry of Defence (MoD) is re-evaluating its 23 December 2013 decision to approve the USD300 million purchase of 98 A184 Black Shark torpedoes from Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacquei (WASS), a Finmeccanica subsidiary.
The reassessment stems from the MoD's 1 January termination of the EUR750 million (USD764 million) contract for 12 AW101 helicopters from AgustaWestland, another Finmeccanica company, on charges of corruption.
It remains unclear whether the MoD will blacklist either AgustaWestland or Finmeccanica, or both, over the AW101 deal. If it decides to blacklist Finmeccanica, the clearance to acquire the long-delayed Black Shark torpedoes by the MoD's Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) will be rescinded, official sources said.
