India Provides Humanitarian Assistance to Libya
India has handed over humanitarian assistance to Libya consisting of life saving medicines, and at the country's National Transitional Council's reqeust is providing a US$1 million worth of medical equipment.
India's ministry of external affairs, MEA, said in a statement, that the NTC is also considering sending injured Libyan nationals to India for medical treatment. It added that Indian authorities not only welcome this, but are also looking forward to receiving injured Libyan patients.
India's humanitarian assistance consisting of life saving medicines and medical equipment, was handed over to NTC Monday by Rajeev Shahare, the joint secretary (West Asia & North Africa) in the MEA.
The Indian Government provided the assistance in cash to the NTC through the United Nation's Office of Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid in New York. Earlier in Benghazi, the NTC provided India with a list of life saving drugs it needed. They were selected as per requirements of Libya.
The MEA said that India has been supportive of the people of Libya and on various occasions, interacted with the NTC in London, Istanbul and Paris meetings, and in the United Nations. The interim government has also been considering sending injured Libyan nationals for medical treatment to India and in this regard a Libyan delegation has already visited India in December last year to tie up treatment of injured Libyan patients in reputed hospitals, it said.
India is also arranging to send a team of 'Jaipur Foot' to Tripoli that would be providing prostheses (artificial limbs) to the injured Libyans, and set up a centre there to provide readymade artificial limbs to injured Libyan patients
