India postpones Teesta water sharing deal

India has postponed the proposed Teesta water sharing deal with Bangladesh amid opposition from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Indian foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai told the press in New Delhi Monday afternoon that nothing will be done without acceptance by West Bengal.

Talking to The Daily Star following the airing of the news Monday afternoon, Mashiur Rahman, the prime minister’s economic affairs adviser, said: “We are not officially informed about this.”

Indian Tara TV quoted the foreign secretary as saying the pact scheduled to be signed during Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s two-day visit to Dhaka from Tuesday has been scrapped. This is mainly because of the objection raised by the West Bengal chief minister.

Mamata had expressed her unhappiness about equally sharing of Teesta waters with Bangladesh and had refused to accompany the PM to Bangladesh. Beside Mamata, chief ministers of Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram and Sikkim are scheduled to accompany the prime minister. Despite the scrapping of the treaty Mamata will not go to Dhaka, the television channel reports.

Mamata is not pleased with equal sharing of the Teesta waters and she strongly believes that Bangladesh should get only 25 percent of the water of Teesta. She thinks that the pact is unfair.

Indian National Security Adviser Shiv Shankar Menon was in Kolkata last week to ally Mamata’s concern but is seems now that it did not work.

Bangladesh should not have trusted these bhartis at the 1st place... this foolish pm hassina not only destroying the interest of Bangladesh by her indian lackey attitude but also destroying her party... Bangladesh in response should scrap transit and hand over of anup chetia... but alas this follish hassina gave away 261 acre of land already to the bhartis even without consulting it with the people of Bangladesh, nor discussing it in the parliament...this is nothing short of treason.

Mamata did the right, like I once said in this very forum, she may look less than suave but the decision rest on her as West Bengal has high stake on this deal. It's another show of incompetency by UPA when they went ahead with deal keeping Mamata in dark. They would never have done it if CPM was in power, seems they have taken her for granted.

Water is vital to Bengal and so Mamata appears to be peeved.

Rightly too.

It is the same as saying the BD sends 50% of the fish catch to Bengal as also pipe in the gas to India without concern for BD interests.

Notwithstanding, BD is in dire strait over water. It will be worse when the Chinese dam the Tsangpo with 29 dams and the water flow becomes a trickle to India and nothing to BD.

+1.

This UPA govt. is turning out to be the most disorganized govt. India ever had. There is complete disconnect at every level and it seems nobody is in charge. This govt. could easily rank as one the worst govt. India had in recent years.

@ India has already started changing her colour, now we are in trap.

@ I remeber, in 1974 once the border agreement between Mujib and Indra Gandhi was signed, it was at once ratified in our parliament but was not ratified in Indian parliament. In one of the clause of that agreement it was agreed upon that Bangladesh would hand over Berubari enclave to India and India would in return gave "Thin Bigha" corridor to Bangladesh so that we could link up with our enclave. But soon some Indian citizens sue against the Indian Govt for this act and the matter remaimed hanging for long time.

@ Never, never believe Indians. Do you think that our old generation was wrong in their prediction ?????? Now-a-days we saw in the Calcutta Bengalee Channels specially in the last Eid holidays it was written, "Khoshir Eid". Moreso, the Bengalee spelling of "Eid" was wrong. These are all "Dhong" !!!!! In the diolouge of Rekha in " Mukadar Ka Sikander",

" Ish dunia me kon dhongi nahi hai !! Dilme piyar ka lalach huta hai, tu O premik banne ka dhong karta hai ".

You are in a mood Mr Akmal...

The entire episode of Teesta water episode is just another way how the stupid Congress GOV us unorganised. This is nothing to do with the objective that GOI dont want to discuss or act on the situation. It could have been handled in a better way if some good managament skill was present in UPA Gov. This is a known fact that W Bengal is impacted with this deal so without discussing with the stake holder, how can UPA gov came out with full media publicity that they r going to make some deal with neighouring country relating to Teesta water deal.

And to BD friends....dont start pinning guns on every issue to India...the reason is that it is a fact that in case of water resource ...the country who are in downstream they have to take a reconcilatary mode with upstream nation...The same rule applies for BD to India and India to China....India has to negotiate with China in the terms that China wants when ever we are talking abt Brahmaputra river....In the simillar way BD has to negotiate with India for the water flowing from Indian river to BD...

So if you shout 100 times by saying that India is bad...then the same thing can told that why dont you allow restriction free access to Indian goods(Non military) to NE states??????....Now the question is If INDIA is bad ...assume a very very dire situation....India is a very very bad guy in this world...so wht is the ultimate result....You wll cut off relationship with India and what will be Indian reaction...just stop whatever water India was supposed to release to BD for ever??? This kind of non sense argument can go for ever but does it solve the real situation of water scarcity of both the situation??
