India pitches for BrahMos induction in Russian naval fleet - Sci/Tech - DNA

India on Tuesday asked Russia to start inducting the 290km range BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles in its naval fleet to further strengthen the joint venture between the two countries.

The two sides had formed the joint venture to produce the supersonic cruise missiles in 1998 and since then, all three wings of the Indian armed forces have ordered BrahMos for their inventory but the Russian side is yet to do so.

In India, the Navy and the Army have already inducted the BrahMos missiles and work is on to develop an air-launched version of the missile to be equipped on the SU-30MKI aircraft.

During the visit of Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin to the BrahMos complex in Delhi, head of the joint venture A Sivathanu Pillai urged the visiting dignitary to ensure induction of the missile in Russian Navy, officials said in the capital.

The Russian deputy prime minister was given a presentation about the missile's capabilities and recent achievements along with live demonstration of the mobile launcher.

Assuring his full support to the BrahMos CEO, Rogozin said, "BrahMos is not only a successful joint venture but also a model for cooperation which has immense political value for our two countries."

During the visit, Rogozin was also shown the development of the various variants of the missiles and the future plans of the joint venture company including a futuristic vision plan — 2050.

Rogozin was accompanied by Russian Ambassador to India Alexander Kadakin, Head of United Aircraft Cooperation Pogosyn Mikhail and Head of Rosoboronexport Isykin Anatoli during the visit to the complex.

Russia not inducting Brahmos into it's navy make me sometime skeptic of the missile's capability :undecided:

RuN won't induct Brahmos. They will go for modified version with definatly longer range. 500km+. Why they would go for 290km range missile ???

Why should they induct a missile with such a limited range? This is a huge problem for the IN - their best missile has only a range of 300km - compare that to the naval scalp of the french navy or the tomahawk of the USN both of which have a range of 1000km. If an IN frigate has to go against a french navy or USN frigate it would be destroyed 700km out without it even firing a missile in return. This is why IN has been focusing on Stealth so much so that they can get close enough to enemy ships - they cant even buy a long range missile from france or russia due to international regulations and have no choice but to wait for the DRDO to develop the nirbhay - which going by the DRDO's track record is going to be a very long wait.

.
They might have designed a longer version then what we have..b

You statement would definitely disappoint so many people here, who believe that Brahmos is the best anti-ship missile out there. The fact that Russians won't use them would dispel that myth.

I am not sure about it but i think that the range of Brahmos is much longer than is officially acknowledged (may be > 500km) this may be due to international regulations of MTCR.

Brahmos is the best anti ship missile in its class - and the class is short range. They dont need a short range missile because all their main adversaries have a long range missile.

in this context the chinese masters would not have any problems over these poor missiles without any capabilities to be supplied to the vietnamese??
Btw chinese don't use Jf17 and some ppl here think it can shoot down even F22

The Russians don't need to add Brahmos, only the internal systems that we developed to increase it's capabilities, the rest is Russian anyway and they use the same missile without the range limitations for years.

And both not meant to be anti ship missiles in first place, but land attack cruise missiles! For anti ship they use Exocet and Harpoons and that's the main requirement of Brahmos too and here it is a class of it's own. Also if I'm not wrong the USN use Tomahawks only from Destroyers or Cruisers and not from Frigates.
