India, Pakistan foreign ministers to meet on UNGA sidelines in New York

India has accepted an offer of talks on the sidelines of the coming United Nations General Assembly meeting made by Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan.

“We have decided that the meeting will be held [between Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj and her Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi]”, said a spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi.

“Building on the mutual desire for peace our two countries, I wish to propose a meeting between Foreign Minister, Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi and the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, before the informal meeting of the SAARC Foreign Ministers at the sidelines of the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York,” Mr. Khan said in a letter sent on September 14, 2018, to his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.

Mr. Modi had written to Mr. Khan congratulating him on being sworn in as Prime Minister. Sources in the Government of India said on Wednesday that Ms. Swaraj’s schedule was yet to be finalized even though she was expected to participate in the SAARC ministerial meeting.

The dialogue process between the two sides has not moved ahead since the Comprehensive Bilateral Dialogue failed to take off after the January 2016 Pathankot terror strike. India has since maintained that talks will be held only if a conducive environment for talks is fostered by Pakistan. Minister of State for External Affairs V.K. Singh reiterated the same this week.

The New York meeting once firmed up, would be the first meeting between the ministers of both sides since the swearing in of Mr. Khan. Since the arrival of the new government, Mr. Qureshi has carried out several trips to important capitals in the region in search of building working relationships.

True. What has changed to go for the talks now? Both countries will reiterate their respective positions, there will be cross-border firing or even a terrorist attack, and talks will be abandoned.

To make any progress, both countries must think outside of the box.

You mean India should isolate pakistan in the world and dry up their source of money and force them to come to the table and give up terrorism if they want the funds to flow ?

Isolation of Pakistan is impossible. India can't and shouldn't do that. Negative actions don't give positive results.

There are only two options. India and Pakistan must put all burning issues aside for the time being and focus on trade.

Another option is they must forget that the other country exists and focus on developing the economy with the rest of the world.

ok.

I will pass on your wisdom to Modi.

Meanwhile Asia Pacific Group has asked Pakistan to curb terror financing and money laundering and make them extraditable offences to get out of FATF's List . :azn: They have said that "Pakistan action against terror funding not satisfactory"

And you know who is going to verify that ? India.

And that is why Imran Khan has sent message to Modi that he wants to meet and "discuss" peace.

Good move. I fully support resumption of talks for peace - it is definitely worth a try.

:laughcry:

Give us Kashmir, and Modi can keep IK

Talks are useful to tell pakistan to end terror.

THEN we can talk further.

ALso you deserve Immi the Dummy , why push him on us. Totally unfair.

Tell Pak government to take action and stop terror then. Both our countries are always trying to destroy the other. But if we talk, it could lead to more trade, more visas and people to people interactions etc and may be then we will start to give a sh*t about one another rather than trying to destroy each other. If anything, at the very least, talks may lead to an end to the senseless killings of our soldiers at the border. So isn't it worth the effort?

As for IK, I thought Bollywood could use a third Khan :laughcry:

Tried that for many years, din't work.

Now there is no more compromise.

End Terror for any serious talks to take place.

That is Non negotiable.

End of the day, nobody in India has any expectations from Puppet khan. He is not in any position to deliver on anything.

All he can do is deliver messages from his army chief. In short, he is just a glorified post man.

So ask yourself this, is it worth the effort ?

India has clarified that it has agreed for a meeting and not resumption of dialogue. So, wishlist will be handed over and if Pakistan works on the same we can think about the dialogue.

We already have our Imran Khan

As for your offer, we might think about it if you take Rahul Gandhi and Mamata Bannerjee as well:cheers:

In all seriousness, there is a new government in Pakistan with a capable leader who is keen to take a different path than his predecessors in terms of foreign relations. The Indian government should make a serious effort to reach out to Pakistan and discuss how to improve ties. Indo-Pak relations can be somewhat normalized even if Kashmir remains disputed.

DGMO talks are already going on and the current talks on going on 2003 Ceasefire pact. Since the past 4 years Pakistan militants dead bodies have been swapped in larger numbers even foreign militants dead bodies have been swapped this time who were killed by Indian security Forces , even the Iraqi Central Intelligence agents were in New Delhi as part of the forensic team and even the GCC Military advisors have been informed by the Indian Military about the origins of the IS foreign Militants who have been killed by the Indian security Forces.

Indian Military DGMO wants Pakistan Military DGMO to add more clauses in 2003 Ceasefire pact and are asking Pakistan Military DGMO to even take the dead bodies of the Maoists cadre who were killed by Indian Security Forces in the Red Corridor regions as during the recent flush out of the Maoists militants , Myanmar Military is unable to take the dead bodies of maoists cadre as Myanmar Military is in completely denial.

Indian Paramilitary Forces have killed 247 Maoists including top ranking maoists cadres.

Maoists have also acknowledged that their top-ranking cadres were gunned down in at least 400 encounters with security forces in the last two years.

“It’s a record that 247 Maoists were killed in the state in just two years. The credit goes to intelligence-based offensive operations conducted by the security forces in the core areas of Maoists,” the Special DG said.

Security forces recovered 678 weapons, including a Light Machine Gun (LMG), nine AK-47 rifles, 20 Insas rifles and 12 SLR rifles, from the arrested as well as surrendered ultras and from 518 encounters since January 2016, he said.

As many as 2834 Maoists were arrested while 1852 surrendered before the police in the above period.

“Besides, 692 Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) were recovered in the last two-and-a-half years,” he added.
